Review: 75032 X-Wing Fighter Microfighter

75032 - Full Set

Were you the one clamoring for a whole new “official” scale that’s been popular as MOCs? If so, Lego has the sets for you! I guess that’s probably because chibi is really just slang for “oversized” or “super deformed” that maybe Lego didn’t want to adopt it as an official term. As a style, it’s obviously something we’ve invested in a lot here at FBTB, with our Chibi contests in the past and featuring builds in that style.

I’m not sure if these things are ever going to get a fair shake in the eyes of the AFOL community, since they replaced the Planets sets that were fairly popular to collectors, and I don’t think popular at all for kids. I don’t have any evidence for that, it’s just… how many kids want to play with what is effectively a christmas ornament and a mini-build with a figure? It was a display piece, which would be fine if it was targeted swiftly at adults, but Lego is notoriously bad at targeting their products outside of the kids market.

These sets are pretty much the opposite. The appeal to kids is pretty obvious, especially if you’ve kept up on the action figure trends. The whole oversized / out-of-proportion look has been big, with Star Wars, Marvel, and Transformers all having a line dedicated to looking odd. More than that, they’re obviously not designed for AFOLs… except of course for that minifig, which sort of proves that someone at Lego is just an evil genius, getting us to drop $10 on a handful of parts just because they know we want a Theron Nett minifig. Well played, Lego… well played. (more…)

76018 Hulk Lab Smash

Site fan Zach wrote in to say that he saw and was able to purchase several new sets from his local LEGO Brand Retail location in Illinois. His haul included one of the two remaining DC Super Heroes Batman sets, 76013 Batman: The Joker Steam Roller, Marvel Super Heroes set 76018 Hulk Lab Smash, Star Wars sets 75032 X-Wing Fighter and 75040 General Grievous Wheel Bike.

Chat room regular murphquake also let us know that the retail stores have been given the green light to immediately sell any new sets they receive without having to wait for the 17th or any other arbitrary street date. Happy hunting!

LEGO Star Wars 2014 Sets Available February 17

Chat room regular ninnymuggins pointed out that LEGO Shop@Home has updated their Star Wars page with a release date for all of their new sets for 2014. Finally, after the sets have been widely available in other parts of the world, North America can join in on the fun. If you’re tenacious enough you may be able to find them at the big box retailers as it’s pretty common knowledge that sets can find their way onto the shelves before the street date. Ace Kim | January 4th, 2014 | LEGO Star Wars, News Reveals Hi-res Images for LEGO Star Wars March 2014 Sets

75030 Millennium Falcon 1 updated their LEGO Star Wars section with all of the March 2014 releases. Normally, new Star Wars products launch in January but this is the first time in the history of the line that it will be launching in March due to The LEGO Movie products being pushed out in time for the film’s February theatrical debut. A total of 19 new products will launch including a brand new sub-theme, “Microfighters” also known as “Recruitment Sets”. The Micorfighters fill the gap that the now-discontinued Planet sets left behind. The majority of the regular line focuses on Episode III sets while most of the Microfighters are based on Original Trilogy ships. We’ve rehosted the images below for your convenience. Pricing remains to be seen. All new LEGO Star Wars products will launch in March.
