This all started when I was watching the DVD's and realized that nobody had yet made a Y-wing
with a cockpit that opened the right way. Well, here you have it. I also did some details and
discolorations based on some of the set-piece Y-wings in A New Hope, since they show better detail
than any of the mini models.
As everyone knows, minifig R2 or R5 look silly atop UCS models. However,
when I did some actual measurement and research, I found that they were only
slightly off, and that a 3-stud or 4-stud wide droid would be just as wrong.
Thus, this squatty little guy right here. An exact UCS-scale R2 unit. I chose
R2 instead of the red droid because all the movie stills I have show blue
R2's in the Y-wings. He's not really meant to stand up to close inspection on his own.
For the most part, I'm happy with the painted parts, but LEGO grey is REALLY hard to color match.
They don't look quite as green in real life.
The steering rings are the same too, so I used the old pic here too. I should really get some
more clean grey flags.
