UK Toy Fair ... Lord Of The Rings

Postby Staff » Tue Jan 22, 2013 4:18 pm

There were 4 new Lord Of The Rings sets on display ... now, I confessed last year that I'd neither read any of the books nor had I lasted more than 45 minutes into any of the films and I'm afraid that is still true, so, I'm gonna be properly rusty on the details here!  Sorry folks ...

The sets are due out in August and are as follows ...

79005 The Wizard Battle ... a small set featuring Gandalf The Grey, Saruman and Eye of Sauron (which appeared to be a special minifig head, although no idea on details as it wasn't actually there ... just an artists impression!).  Price point £11.99.

79006 The Council of Elrond ... there's a sort of building and a table, around which I assume the council can gather.  Features 4 minifigures, Elrond, Arwen, Frodo and Gimli.  Price point £29.99.

79007 Battle At The Black Gate ... an impressive looking black castle type thing, featuring 5 minifigures, Aragorn, Gandalf The White, Mouth Of Sauron and 2 Mordor Orcs.  Price point £59.99.

79008 Pirate Ship Ambush ... a rather large pirate ship, although the deck is quite sparse.  PLENTY of minifigures though ... Aragorn, Legolas Greenleaf, Gimli, King Of The Dead, 2 Soldier's Of The Dead, Pirate of Umbar (which I believe was played by Peter Jackson himself in the film) and 2 Mordor Orcs.  Price point £89.99.

And that is pretty much all I can say about that!

To clarify, is 79005 containing an actual Sauron minifig or did you mean Sauramon (the White)?

I understand your lack of LOTR background but thought I'd ask for clarification just because....

:)

just saw the info updated, thank you for the clarification. ;)

^I think it's Saruman (confusing names)
Also, did the Black Gate include an eagle as in prelim pics?
Thought you'd like this about the Vatican cameos.

I've corrected it ... it's list as Saruman and he is all white ... from what I remember ...

I also wonder if the eagle ends up in the set or not...

I do believe the Eye of Sauron will be in the wizard battle set printed on a minifig head to represent the palantir...

There were only 4 LOTR sets at the Fair and they were all listed in the first post ... googling Isengard got me a picture of a bit tower and that definitely wasn't there. I understand from other sources this may be some sort of 10xxx exclusive set and they're generally not at the UK Toy Fair.

That's certainly what the picture of the figures that will come with the set suggested. The picture was of a golden looking head, although they weren't sure on the final colour and any printing.

Shouldn't the Wizard Battle have Gandalf the White, not Grey?

Not if we're talking about the scene in FotR when Gandalf and Saruman engage in some Wiz-Fu/Three Stooges-style antics.

Eagles would be great. What about Eowyn? Do you happen to remember if this set had a female minifig? (I guess you would've mentioned it, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.) As io9 put it the other day, LOTR is a bit of a sausage fest. I know LEGO has been as well (although they've been really doing a good job of changing lately with some great figs), but I'm hoping that's not the case here. I really hope Eowyn makes it into this set. Her doing battle with the Witch King Nazgul was a scene burned in my memory from the Rankin Bass cartoon, the books, and the Peter Jackson films. Or perhaps this set is meant to focus on the beginning of the battle, with the Mouth of Sauron coming out to negotiate, etc. In which case, I'm holding out for a proper Eowyn vs Nazgul set the likes of these MOCs by General Magma and Flobnomdob.

Image Image.

I'd take either a brick-built Fell Beast a la the Ninjago dragons OR a Rancor style "fig", please.

Thanks for the coverage! These Toy Fair updates were a nice treat on an otherwise crappy day.

thanks for the great report guys!

great LOTR sets coming out!

Arwen, Elrond, Mouth of Sauron, Gandalf the White, Saruman, King of the dead, Aragorn in gondorian Battle armor, more orc/undead/human army builders, and a great Eagle?

EPIC!

That Black Gate set will be a must have Lego set for any LOTR/hobbit fan.
