Amazing Spider Mosaic

When looking at Thorsten Bonsch's (Xenomurphy) MOC of what I am sure is a McFarlane-era Spider-man, it's amazing how he was able to capture the essence of ol' webhead using LEGO elements to form the mosaic. Look a little closer and it's even more mindblowing to realize that the pieces are just scattered on a black dropcloth and then photographed. It definitely showcases how LEGO can transcend from toy to art.

Here's a nice Batman one, inspired by Xenomurphy: http://www.flickr.com/photos/56829148@N ... 41393@N00/
Thought you'd like this about the Vatican cameos.

That's really nice, though as a LEGO mosiac specifically I find it a lot LESS impressive or "mindblowing" than one that is actually constructed. By simply scattering the pieces without assembling them, I feel you kind of lose the uniqueness of using LEGO as a medium in the first place. It isn't really any different than if you just used bits of tile or plastic that WEREN'T LEGO.

Which is to say, still a very, very nice bit of artwork. Don't get me wrong. I'm just responding the the notion that using LEGO to make a mosiac this way is "even more mindblowing". I personally find it less so.

I like this on a couple of levels, one of those is because it reminds me of the old Horizon model kit of Spider-Man. I've got one of these Horizon vinyl kits stashed in a closet. It's a classic rendition of Peter Parker's Spider-Man, which is nice to have because Spider-Man's going to change so drastically, soon, with the end of Amazing Spider-Man.

I know I have to accept that these pop-art characters are part of modern mythology, and that they're going to change, but there was something comforting that, even with each retellling, the essential facts didn't change...much.

I guess the same thing with LEGO. There are some unwritten LEGO rules that people bend and break, but in the end, it makes for a larger world of possibilities.
