My box is about 40% smaller than your standard ring box you get from the ring store. I also made a small leaver on the back so I could flick it open. With this box I was able to palm it in my hand, BAM knee on the ground and the box out with the lid open before she even knew wtfx was happening
I made it tight so the ring couldn't move and scratch and cut out the stuffing from a ring box and stuffed it into the top to protect the gem.
