Say what you will, I doubt anybody will be able to convince me that it wouldn't be a LOT easier to knock up something good, be it big OR small, with a larger selection of pieces to draw from.

I agree completely. It is more of a challenge building with a limited supply. much easier when you have whatever pieces you need. (it's also easier if everything is organized)

TBH, I only ever enter a contest if it's outside my comfort zone. If it seems easy, I usually pass regardless of the prize.

Also, I generally don't bricklink any parts during a contest build because, to me, it feels like cheating. I try not to think about the prizes, I just do the very best that I can with what I have and let the chips fall where they may. Don't look for excuses to give up or fail, push on and use any perceived handicap as a chance to become a better builder.

If you aren't challenging yourself, or at least enjoying yourself then you're missing the point.

Most importantly, don't let anything distra.... ooooh tacos!

Plenty challenging, it's the enjoying part that starts to wear off after pretty much every idea I have runs into a wall of lack of needed parts.

I need to find a new process, I guess, where I start with the parts, not with the idea. Hard to do when I'm shooting for a themed build, though.

Hello all,
I humbly submit my entry for Mech Madness.
I chose the Crimson Dynamo, a villian from the Marvel universe.

That thing is awesome! I love it! So much detail...can't wait to see the rest!

meanwhile, I still have the bottom half of mine to finish...and the arms to correct...and I have very little time to work on it each week...

I would definitely agree that having a large parts pool to pull from makes it easier, provided it is organized. However, mine is not even completely sorted by color.

Mister Ed, Your parts first idea may have merit. Typically I focus on a part of the design, what pieces I need for it, determine what I have available, If I don't have enough pieces in one color, then I tend to use multiple colors to achieve my goal. My suggestion is to just start building. Sometimes the end result of my work is affected by not having the parts I would prefer. (even with a large collection it happens).

To be honest, when it comes to art, it's not about the materials or the medium, it's about the artist. Photography is one of my hobbies and I can honestly say I have taken considerably better photos on my friends point and shoot $100 camera than on my $1000 SLR. Yes it is more of a challenge to build with less pieces, but that is where imagination and creativity are harbored. As in the old adage "Necessity is the mother of invention." I myself have a tiny Lego collection compared to the big boys, but I will still enter this contest with the best I can come up with and I wont complain about it.

not too bad...you still have about a month and a half...just make sure yours isn't too ambitious. I'm personally hoping to get mine done by comic con...which is in 20 days! I'm sooo excited, can't wait. who knows, you may even see my mech there. (if you're going, that is)

Ok, here is my entry: "MAD HATTER'S MECH".

Inspired by the character from "Batman: The Animated Series".
I wanted to build a robot that could really exist in the series
and this is how I imagine it, with big rabbit's face as a torso
(Mad Hatter is really the brain of the robot)
and big gun that generates hypnotizing waves, or shoots laser beams.

I have dark purple parts only from two Zurg's sets
so this was really hard decision for me to built it
in this color sheme.

Mad Hatter is obviously bad guy in this contest...

Well, I'm done! But that doesn't mean the hardest part is over... The mech's really sturdy, but 10 pounds of bricks on legs is gonna be a big problem. It can stand up by itself, but just to be safe, I'll probably lean on something when I take the pics.

Still plugging away. Oddly enough, I seem to have fallen into starting at the extremities and working my way in. I've got hands, feet, and most of a head, with the beginnings of arms and legs (as well as a chest plate of sorts that I'm quite happy with...provided I can figure out the best way to integrate THAT). Still I'm developing a cautious optimism that I might actually finish this thing some day.

Biggest problem now is turning out to be figuring out how to attach all this stuff and make it at least moderately poseable. Connections are tough. Kind of makes me wish maybe I had bought more technic or Bionicle-type sets in the past.

Arming this thing is going to be another challenge. I feel like armaments look better the more INTEGRATED they look, but I've got no real ideas on that score.

Sadly, it turns out the timing is bad for me personally. Apparently I'm going to be working pretty much double shifts at work (including Saturdays) up until just about election day.
