a question about exclusives

Postby legobatmanbatmobile » Tue Mar 17, 2009 1:45 pm

i thought that when an item was exclusive, it meant that you could only get from LEGO shops.
but i recently noticed the ultimate collectors millemium falcon on the target website: http://www.target.com/LEGO-Star-Wars-Co ... ars&page=1

can somebody please tell me what it means when an item is exclusive?

My first inkling is to lock this because of it's distinct lack of a shift key. Next time, I may not be so forgiving...

But instead... the UCS line have always been special cases. It's been available from places like Target.com, Amazon, and 3rd party resellers since shortly after it came out. The Sandcrawler was another Hard to Find/Exclusive that could be bought numerous places other than LEGO. My understanding on them is that they were not available in stores, other than LEGO retail, and then various places online.

Can an exclusive set (take the LAAT/AT-OT for example) be purchased at an official Lego store or is it only available online?

I think most of the exclusives eventually find themselves at other retail outlets/online stores. I remember I bought my cloud city way back when from KBtoys.com.

Cloud City wasn't an exclusive, it just wasn't picked up by many retailers. It and the UCS Tantive IV were available at Target and performed terribly there.

I think the specific set is exclusive to a certain retail chain(s). But all the exclusive sets are still available through Lego, both in store and online.

For instance the fighter tank(7679),I thought was supposed to be a target exclusive but it was available on Starwarsshop.com( I think George Lucas is an exception to the rules though). It was also $5 cheaper on Lucas's site and i pre ordered it on a week they had free shipping so they threw in the free shipping when the tank was available in august last. They also gave me a bonus gift too, its like a little funny looking boba fett figure for some SW role playing type of game. Im not into that kinda stuff so i gave it to one of my friends.

I know that the republic cruiser(7665) was a toys r us exclusive, this one I've only seen at Lego store and Toys r us. I dont know what the story was with this one but i do know that its discontinued and i still see it on the shelves at two of my local TRU's. By the way if you dont have this set and have a chance to get it i would. It was one of the last "good deals"from Lego for a big ship IMO. I think the retail price was $87 i had some gift money so i think when all was said and done i paid like 20 or 30 bucks for it.

With both of these examples i guess it could go either way,how hard and fast this rule is if the sets are not selling i dont know. I would imagine if lego had some sets that were piling up they might want to redistribute them to other retailers.

Thats a really good question since lego has so many types of "exclusive" sets. The Count Dooku set would be a good one to watch and see how long it hangs around. Ive only seen that one at Toys R Us,Lego and SWS as well. I also thought the Millenium Falcon was a UCS not necessarily an exclusive set, but i dont have one so i cant look at the box.
I'm curious as to what the actual answer is now.

Well on lego.com its in the "exclusives" catagory along with the death star, the walking at-at and the rouge shadow..but when you click on the tab for the product discription they specifically call it the UCS Millenium Falcon. So technically its both from what im seeing.

Well it seems to me that the term exclusive for lego covers a broad range of set catagories..

It sounds like they kind of apply this title willy nilly. There doesnt seem to be a lot of rymme or reason to it, unless its just a blanket term. They certainly have a lot of catagories for these sets, limited edition, UCS edition, collectors edition, blah blah. I guess Lego's point is they're all exclusive in some way from just a "normal" set.

Come to think of it alot of company's throw these useless discripive title's around, I mean my moms 88 camry says limited edition on it and believe me those aint limited!

Ive never really cared for this type of classification unless it has some teeth to it, like an actual number count, like 252 out of 2500 but thats just my feelings on the subject.

I think LEGO is one of the rare instances where limited edition actually means limited. I've had other collectors tell me that when you see limited edition on a collectibles, it means a ton of them were made, so when they see limited edition they tend to pass on those collectibles, because in the end they are deemed worthless.

Okay, first off, Nick is our resident grammar oriented MOD. He just wants you to put some time into posts and use the shift key.

As for the Falcon, LEGO doesn't keep their promises. They don't keep promises on exclusives. They don't keep promises on limited edition. (take a look at the Twilight) LEGO just doesn't keep promises. I don't know why it is on Target, but it is probably temporary. LEGO just is that way.

Wait, that ugly thing is supposed to be an exclusive? I'm trying to think of a store I HAVEN'T seen it in. I know it was at Target AND Fred Meyer, pretty much every time I went there, up until recently, and Fred Meyer NEVER has exclusives...

Yea i think the "shadow" is just repulsive looking. It's very imperial when you think about it. no style to it, its black and blocky opresive looking and inelegant. PPPbbbbTTT!!!

It kinda funny with the whole idea of limited editons that arent actually numbered because there's no way to prove that it actually is any different from a regular set. Other than the "lipservice" of just putting a name on the box. Then what happens when the limited edition doesnt sell, they pile up and are everywhere(i.e. the twilight). Thats just a risk of doing this kinda business. Its a gamble and sometimes the stuff doesnt move at all. The crappy economy dosent help matters much though. However on the positive side these sets have a tendancy to stick around a lot longer, as in the case of the UCS falcon and the walking AT-AT, for years. Heck they're still trying to get rid of the death star 2's on shop@home.
