Firefly CUUSOO Entry Gets to 10,000 Votes

Postby Staff » Sun May 06, 2012 8:53 am

If you are a fan of the show Firefly and have unrealistic expectations, I have news for you. Tbone_tbl's "Firefly Serenity playset" has reached enough votes to enter LEGO's review process starting in June. While Firefly's fans can be a vocal bunch, they're the definition of niche. This is likely to play a major role--along with the fact there is nothing current to tie a Firefly product to--in LEGO's decision regarding the license. That, and creating a feasible, marketable model.

This would be so cool. That said, I am starting to get sick of implausible theme ideas hitting 10,000 votes. Odds are we won't see any of these, and now that they are only reviewing ideas quarterly, it'll be a long time before we get closure.

Agreed. That set looks like a big build so it would be incredibly expensive even if it weren't a niche cuusoo project... I definitely don't think Lego will go for this...

At least this one focuses on a build, but yeah, never, ever going to happen. We couldn't even get decent figures licensed from the series/movie, not a chance for LEGO. That and Fox sucks.
If the above post didn't offend you, you're probably reading it wrong.

So weird seeing my picture come up on the fbtb homepage/my newsfeed. What a fun month and a half.

I almost didn't put it up because I wasn't sure it would make the review. I was just going to do it myself, but a friend convinced me to give it a shot, glad I listened to him.

this is an awesome build, but the only type of line i can see it in is a famous starships line but doubt it would fly

I would've supported this if I'd signed up for Cuusoo before five minutes ago, but it looks like you can't continue to support something once it's already reached 10,000.

Best of luck to the project, I'm definitely rooting for it.

These are one off models, not lines. The problem is the licensing for these items. Who owns the rights. If it's a studio that Lego already has a relationship with, it's feasible. If it's a dead property or someone Lego hasn't worked wit it's just never going to happen.
eBay store, contact me if you'd like to perform trades from my inventory. I'm looking for original genosian fighers, second version a-wing fighters and tie bombers. I may be interested in other sets so let me know what you have.

I'd never seen Firefly, but as a result of this model watched the first episode on Amazon Prime yesterday. It didn't blow me away, although the head alien from V looks absolutely amazing in it with with long hair. Is it worth persevering with?

I would say no. But I always say no, so people aren't mad at me when they are dissappointed. If you didn't like the 1st ep, why continue? If you thought it was interesting, or want to know more about the characters, or want to hear some great one liners, or you trust Joss, go ahead and watch more.

I think that the more AFOL projects that reach 10,000, LEGO will start to realize that it had better change its target demographic or else lose a lot of customers. I just hope that the kind of people who start these projects won't get discouraged by other failed attempts...

"Firefly TV show and Serenity film contain content that is not appropriate for our core target audience of children ages 6-11."

How did the IJ Temple of Doom set get produced?

A lot of shows take a while to pick up, so quitting on the first episode isn't always the best thing (Star Trek: Next Generation is a good example). Me, I didn't care much for the pilot of Firefly, either, but it picked up for me a lot sometime in the second or third episode.

Yeah, I'll admit the 'not suitable' explanation is a bit bull, especially when they've just released a set modeled on a scene where one character gets sliced across the chest and another gets his arms and legs dismembered and basically gets burned alive.

Temple of Doom was rated PG when it came out. Though I've never seen Firefly and can't comment on it's content, I did see just a bit of Serenity and what little I saw didn't seem age appropriate for 6-11 year-olds. That and I'm guessing the target audience for Firefly was more "teen to young adult and up" whereas all the Indys are supposed to be family films (though ToD definitely stretches that definition to its threshold.) Plus it was probably easier to justify when they were already making other Indiana Jones sets.

Mostly speculation, but regardless, I think they made the right decision regarding the Serenity model for multiple reasons.

EDIT:
Just looked up the content advisory on IMDb and found this for Temple of Doom:

"This movie (and Gremlins) is the reason the PG-13 rating was made." So I guess it got grandfathered in.

This is exactly why this entry was so swiftly rejected. Sure, there were other considerations, but this is priority number one.

Well for one thing, US ratings aren't everything. In the UK Temple was a straight PG, LOTR and Pirates were 12s but Firefly and Serenity are 15s.
