Review: 30160 Batman Jetski

Postby Staff » Sun Apr 29, 2012 7:20 am

Oh Toys R Us and their exclusives...

30160 overall

30160 Batman Jetski is the first of what will hopefully be many Super Heroes polybags. The best parts of the DC and Marvel lines are the minifigures, so a cheap way to get them is always welcomed. It's not as cheap as it could be, thanks to Toys R Us, but it's a start.

As usual for polybag sets, there isn't much going on here. The Batman minifig is the star here. It's the exact same black-suit version from 6863 Batwing Battle Over Gotham City and 6864 The Batmobile and the Two-Face Chase, but those are $34.99 and $49.99 respectively.$4.99 isn't too bad for just the minifigure, especially after several years of Batman costing a lot on Bricklink. The jetski just adds a little playability. There's only one spare piece; a single 1x1 yellow round plate. Batman doesn't get any accessories either. Come on, LEGO. Give him at least a Batarang! Or some Bat shark repellent.

So yeah, the jetski. Well, it resembles a jetski, so mission accomplished. It's a simple build and basically works for what it is. It's got Batman's color scheme of black with yellow highlights. That, plus the flick-fire missiles and fins make this clearly Batman's jetski, as goofy as it is.

Of course, I have a few problems with it. First, the fins get in the way of the flick-fire, but those rarely work anyway. Second, the jetski has no motor. How does it go? Third, the jetski rests on two bley "boat stud" plates, making it impossible to balance straight. Not an issue if it's in the water, but this thing can't float. I'll forgive it because it looks like Batman's always going for a sharp turn when you rest it on the shelf. Very action-y. Turn Batman's face to the smirk and he looks like he's having a grand olde time.

What I Liked:

-A (fairly) cheap way to get Batman

-The jetski serves its purpose, has good parts like the computer monitor.

What I didn't Like:

-No accessories for Batman? Come on.

-Expensive for what you get (Toys R Us exclusive.)

-Jetski design is passable at best.

Verdict:
Buy it. It's a great little impulse set, even for $4.99 USD. It's Batman! And he's riding a jetski! Why wouldn't you buy it? Unless you already have this Batman from other sets. Or you don't like Batman. Otherwise, there's no reason not to get one.

Can you show a side by side comparison? Bricklink lists them as the same minifigure.

As far as I know the minifigure is actually the same but the cowl is what is different there are slight variation but you can tell when you have them side by side. The image I have is not as clear and I don't know how to upload the images onto the forum properly it keeps messing up on me but as a solution here is a recent video that was done by smutoys on youtube. Skip to about the 0:25 mark and he goes into explaining it and shows a side by side comparison. Hope that helps.

Quite a difference. I wonder if it's a new mold that will be used from here out or a one off.
Even more reason to try and find a couple of these.

Edit: I just noticed that the pictures show that the eye holes don't line up properly with the white band. Could the printing on the head be off on some of these?

Yes, the printing is off on some (many?) of the new cowled Batmans. They updated the cowl, but didn't bother to update the face printing.

Yep I find it interesting that the cowl would be different. I would have assumed that they might update the minifig head first or alongside the cowl.

The face printing is off on the minifig that came with my Jetski as well.

The back of the bag had China listed as one of the source countries. I'm thinking that the Chinese part might have been the cape? It had a different cardboard sleeve than I've seen in the past (a 3d box rather than just an envelope). Unless it was the minifig, which would explain the face error... What do you all think?

I got the Iron Man Cosmic Cube escape yesterday and that also had Loki's cape in a "box" rather than a flat envelope.
