Lego VIP modulars 10230 in Stores!

Postby Gooker1 » Mon Jan 02, 2012 1:04 pm

Check your local brick and mortar Lego stores as I just scored the modular set. Looks sweet although the box is a bit boring. This was at Ontario mills.

Yeah, grabbed one from Chicago yesterday. Only saw it as I was leaving the store - it was tucked away. Used the 10% off coupon that Lego sent me in the mail a couple of weeks back.

Is this the first "meta" set that Lego have made? Maybe they'll make a version out of Duplo bricks next.

I guess this could be a series - every 5th full-sized modular they bring out a set of Mini Modulars too.

using the coupon for this is a great idea, seeing as this is vip exclusive and unlikely to get clearanced

I guess it depends on the context of the question. They've done some special sets for employees that were LEGO models of things like moulding machines. They've also done the more obvious stuff like this...so, no - strictly speaking, not the first.

Yeah, I don't think the moulding machines are "meta", but I would probably class the truck set in there, which would probably make it the first. These mini modulars though are probably the first time Lego has made a set which is just another scale of an existing set, that I can think of.

Unless, of course, you count all the Star Wars mini sets.

I'm still really "meh" on this set. I can't decide whether to buy one as an investment, one for myself, or just skip it entirely. My fear is that they'll be releasing future versions of this with subsequent modular designs, and I'll be stuck completing a set of those in addition to the full-size ones.

I went to the Ontario store today with the intent of picking up this set. They had one assembled over by the PAB wall and looking at it I was like... meh. I mean it looks great, but for $80 and looking at the part selection (many tiny bits) I decided to pass for now. I grabbed the new Ninja copter instead!

At the risk of digressing...

You don't think a LEGO set of a machine that produces LEGO bricks is meta? I'd have to disagree with you. The truck (3221) isn't even the only one, though I think it may be the first to come with bricks made up to resemble boxes of LEGO.

As far as the scale issue, I guess you could add this guy, though I guess in going the other direction, that's more "mesa."

Not to split hairs...reproducing the modular building series in a smaller scale is a bit unusual, just not entirely unique. If all you mean by "meta" is self-referential, though, I'd say these all qualify.
