I'm assuming that LifeLites products (http://www.lifelites.com) are not allowed, due to the fact that the wires, LEDs, and circuit boards aren't official, even though they use official parts like half-pins and plates. Am I correct?

I have tried using the official lights from the 8293 Power Functions accessory set, but the result was fairly pathetic. (Maybe I need to try some new batteries, although the box still has enough power to run an XL motor just fine.)

Okay, I don't want to be pedantic or annoying, but basically I want to make sure that when we say "engine" and "engine pod", we are using the word engine in the "largish mechanical-looking form-over-function thing that makes go ZOOM!" sense, and not the "something that has intakes, exhaust, and could be resonably expected to function as a jet engine" sense. Jugding by the white and blue example entry, I'm assuming the first, but I thought I'd ask. Thanks!

Correct. It should look functional to an extent, but honestly, these are stripped down engines that hover and are connected by a beam of energy. They don't have to make complete sense, just make it clear it's not just there for decoration.

I really don't have the time or enough "spare" (not on display) parts for a decent contest entry, but after looking at the PF motors that were lying on my desk I knocked up this utterly minimalist podracer:




There is a red lightsaber blade inside the three trans red bricks, holding them together as one of them is facing the other way.

It's a "system" scale physical model, has a minifig alien pilot and consists only of official Lego parts.
I guess with a little dressing on the pods and a bit more cockpit this could actually turn into an entry after all...

That's nice, but if you could really work on the cockpit and put a few pieces to the pods you could have a decent entry. You just need a few parts and 15 minutes to make. You've got something going here

GM- that's rather clever, I agree with a minimal amount of additional work it would be a nice entry.
