2011 Podracer Challenge: The Big Race

2011 Podracer Challenge

Greetings, programs! You might remember: our weeklong poll ended dramatically with a 3-way tie for the 24th spot in the race. After giving our brave pilots (and their podracers!) some cooldown time, we're ready for the main event: the podrace itself!

When: Saturday May 7th at 4pm PST / 7pm EST
Where: UStream channel Podracer Challenge 2011

The Race is a 3-Lap video broadcast of those 26 racers each getting a turn to roll a die, which has blue sides and red sides. Red sides are bad events, blue are good. You roll blue, you draw a card from the Good Event pile; red from the Bad Event pile. These events will consist of some action and a point modifier, for example: "dodge a stalagmite. Well played. +5 pts" or "you failed to dodge that stalagmite. Joker laughs. -5 pts." Your points at the start of the race equal the number of votes you got in the poll. Points will be modified as each event dictates during the course of each lap and will change the positions of those 26 racers, and after all 26 have had an event drawn, the lap is over and the lowest 14 will be axed from the race. Lap 2 will feature the remaining 12 racers rolling the die again, and Lap 3 will be the final 6 racers battling it out in the same process. The racer with the most points at the end of Lap 3 is the Race Winner.

I'm estimating this whole race will take between 45 minutes and an hour. For those who can't be there live, we'll be posting the video on the site afterwards.

Hope to see you tomorrow!

Sent a message to the troops, they're priming the engines now, doing some last minute maintenance.

Our apologies, due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to cut the race off after lap 1. We will resume the next laps tomorrow at some point. We'll be posting the time in this thread. Standings after 1 lap of events:

The two podracers that got the "out of the race" events had their point totals adjusted to reflect a -100 point total.

Hi there !

I just watched the video and I think my Crystal Skull Podracer was at 27:52. It was a good event with holographic camo as a fast-moving bantha  and plus 7 points, instead of getting out of the race ~

Very exciting and funny events. Nice race in the 1st lap and good luck in the 2nd !!

Perhaps blue tiles are slightly heavier than the reds.

There's two buttons I needed to press on the ustream broadcast page. I hit the broadcast button, but forgot to hit the record button for lap 2. I will record a recap video retelling all the events of lap two.

I just looked at the spreadsheet and there was a blank field next to my entry in lap 3, so does that mean I got a neutral "0" point-modifier in the final lap? Just curious. . .

Again, cool contest! Thanks for putting this on. The race element made this a different sort of event which was fun to see.

I'm going to post the full list of events later, but here was the card drawn for you on Lap 3, mrcrskater:

Morph Ball - You flip a switch and draw your engines closer to your pod, making you a less likely target.
(Immunity from negative points for the rest of the race.)

Aww, too late! Why couldn't it have morphed on the 1st lap?!

Anyway, thanks for the update, Chief! Since I also missed the video feed, I look forward to seeing the breakdown of all of the events.

There are recordings of Lap 1 and Lap 3 on the streaming site, but I screwed up on Lap 2.
