Call for a final Bionicle set

Postby Tilius » Thu Nov 26, 2009 10:34 pm

Hey guys,

I know most folk here are, naturally, fans of Lego SW and System, and generally don't care for the Bionicle theme, but hear me out, as I'm pretty sure that many of you will be interested in gaining this System-based set. I'm thinking if there's enough discussion and general thumbs-up to the concept of this set from the AFOL community, it could happen, and be an appealing set for everyone. Anyway, here's the rest copied from Eurobricks, since all the information you need is there:

As we know, Bionicle is ending. The Stars are the final sets we're getting, apparently.

Many people are thinking that these aren't good enough as finale sets, and the general consensus is that people want this guy in set form. Here's some concept art. For people who aren't fans of Bionicle, this guy is basically the definitive character - most of the storyline takes place within this robot's body.

He'd also be pretty hard to represent purely through Bionicle pieces, and it's most likely that, if made as a big set, plenty of System elements would be encorporated as well. That's what, I think, might interest AFOLs. Think of it as a UCS set of a Bionicle character. Importantly, though, is that for this set to be made, the fans need to ask for it.

Now, it's likely that most of BZP will be on board, but that won't be enough. What we Bionicle fans need is for fans of every other theme to back us up, so to speak. The Bionicle storyline is to continue until at least 2011, giving enough time for the set to be designed. As a possible S@H exclusive, I think the idea of this set coming into existence isn't too far-fetched.

I'm just interested to hear what you guys are thinking - not only those Bionicle regulars, but fans of any other Lego themes. I really think this set could appeal to everybody, done right.

My blog here will be kept updated with any progress made on this project, and, if you're a BZP member, there's a poll about this here.

Please give your help by discussing this proposed set.

Thanks,

- Tilius

I think if you wanted to see this, you should have asked two years ago. That's about how long it takes to go from idea to shelf. Me and my negativity thinks you're far too late to make this a reality. Sorry.

Well, Bionicle's storyline is still going for two more years, which will prolong interest in the line. Plus, I'm sure some sort of set design for this figure as a set exist somewhere - the character has been designed for 9 years now...

Technically they already released two different sets of that character (assuming that is Mata Nui, which is what I always thought anyway), as part of the "Legends" line of figures.

I'm well aware of that, however both of those sets represent a form of the character which was designed especially for 2009. The design we're asking for is the definitive design, in place since 2001, and as such would be a fitting end to the line.

Anyhow, the purpose of this topic is to discuss whether people would be interested in buying such a set.

Well I was into Bionicle from the first Borohk to the end of Metru Nui and had never seen that interpretation of Mata Nui before. I'd only known him as the 'Great Spirit' (and therefore metaphorical) that inspired the first island's name. I'm pretty sure that that concept of Mata Nui's body was the actual pysical universe. And never considered him the definitive character. I think its a purely new thing.

Now that means two things: one, people who were into Bionicle to begin with will not really know much about the physical Mata Nui, so they wouldn't be too interested. Two, Bionicle is aimed at 7-12 year olds and I can't imagine there are that many adult fans (at least in realtion to Star Wars). So the main fan audience isn't that large. Still would be really nice to see.

Put me down as a definite "not interested."

Uda, why aren't you interested? It isn't particularly constructive to just respond like that - give some form or reasoning, thanks.

one, people who were into Bionicle to begin with will not really know much about the physical Mata Nui, so they wouldn't be too interested.

Physical Mata-Nui was featured heavily at the end of 2008, as well as featuring at the start of the 2009 movie, and is set to play a major role next year.

Two, Bionicle is aimed at 7-12 year olds and I can't imagine there are that many adult fans (at least in realtion to Star Wars). So the main fan audience isn't that large.

As a S@H exclusive, though, it would sell. BZP consists mainly of 7-12 year olds, the target audience, and the concept has received a great reception there.

You're hilarious.

Anyway, can we get back on topic and talk about whether people would be interested in a System-based set of this characters?

Thanks,

Trying to force a thread to stay on topic is like herding cats. But good luck to you. I, for one, don't care one way or the other about the set.

I think the short answer is no. To me, Bionicle has always been a cheap (around a fiver, with the odd twenty quid set) line. That was the main reason I stopped buying it (it got very expensive) and an even more expensive set just does not appeal.

Why thank you, but seriously I agree with Don, I understand this is short notice but If you wanted this you should have started this long ago. And even if this does become reality I doubt it will be made of system parts. It would seems like too bad a move to make an AFOL aimed set for a line barely any AFOL's like.

As I've said, the storyline is running until 2011, meaning that the 'hardcore' fans who would buy this set will still, most likely, be interested.

And whether AFOLs like the Bionicle line or not, a System-based set would still likely be of interest to many who are able to look beyond simply the name. It'd be a good parts package, and the character itself has a nice design. I think it'd still appeal.

Tilius, I appreciate your passion for the theme you love, but if you're looking for community support here, I'm afraid you're barking up the wrong tree.
I don't begrudge your efforts to get your idea out, but I would question whether they might be better directed to a more receptive audience. :)

I think you've still got a narrow appeal. Why does this set need to be massive? I could see it retailing for $10/20 and still looking alright.

This is useless anyway: even if WE can agree, does that mean TFL will want to make it?

Hmm. I might buy this, but What are the Stars? And who is that guy? Also what do you mean by "most of the storyline takes place within this robot's body?" You mean all the toa and people were inside this guy? Please explain... :D

True, though I'm just going around every Lego forum and seeing what people think.

Well, the idea of it being massive is because it'll be the final Bionicle set, plus the character itself is the biggest character in the series.

And no, it might not mean they want to make it, but it's worth discussing.

The Stars are the line of 6 sets being released in 2010. The guy we want to get made is Mata-Nui, and yes, all the Toa etc were inside this guy throughout the storyline. The 01 island location was this guys face, and when the characters descended into Metru-Nui after the '03 storyline, they entered his 'brain', so to speak.

OK, now i finally looked up what the 'Stars' were and I struggle to see how they aren't a fitting end to the line? You've got a figure from most of the key eras and a special 'Collect Them All' bonus in that you can make a special edition of the first ever character. That seems a good send off to me.

From what I've heard, Master Fetty, most fans have been disappointed with the quality and the juniorized port of the original sets to the new versions.
