Postby RocketClone » Thu Sep 17, 2009 3:19 pm

After seeing this on the news ill have to say this really is'nt that shocking since we knew it was coming but i thought id like to make a topic on this.

And his most notible movies were The Outsiders,Dirty Dancing,Point Break, and Waking up in Reno.
In 1991 he was awarded Sexiest Man Alive by the people magazine.

You forgot Ghost, which back in my single days, wasn't a half bad chick flick for taking a girl out on a date to go see. Roadhouse is still one of the all time cheesy classics. It had everything from over the top acting, characters, and dialog. "The name... is Dalton."

No. He was poisoned. Because it's impossible for a human being to die of something like that. It was murder, of course.

At least we will still always be able to contact him, as long as we have Whoopi Goldberg........

Maybe Rocko'll show up one of these days with an incredible Patrick Swayze shrine made of Lego... Complete with scantily-clad women and... Uh... guess that's it, really.

Anyway, I've never really seen any of his movies, but it's always sad to hear about another death... So RIP, Mr. Swayze.

Pretty sure he got it from Justfrakkinaround.net, don't know if you've heard of that site? You'll also get redirected to it if you type in 'sarcasm' in the address bar... ;)

It was sad to see that he died, but one of the things that really struck me as truly messed up with this country is how we value a celebrity death higher than any other. It's tragic when any one person dies, famous or no, and yes, Swaze touched a lot of people with (and in) his movies.

But at the same time, less than 24 hours before Patrick died, a man named Norman Borlaug passed away as well. Few people have ever heard that name or know who he is. Yet he is a man who also touched lives.

1 Billion or more of them, to be exact. I won't go into his life here, as there is info out there if you search for that name, but he is, probably beyond a shadow of a doubt, the greatest person to have lived in our lifetimes. And there's something very sad that no one in American knows it.

I knew about Norman Borlaug, but didn't know he'd died until I'd read your post. I can't say for sure it wasn't reported on the news over here, but I certainly didn't see it. And you're right that says an awful lot about our society.

Norman Borlaug's influence was immense and probably unquantifiable. I suspect because of the comfortable lives we tend to lead we tend to regard the death of celebrities as something more because of the more personal way in which they touch our lives.

It also highlights how society regards scientists and pioneers etc. in life. The researchers and thinkers who have influenced and are going to influence our lives over the next 100 years are relatively unknown to the general public. (Yet a part of me thinks there are advantages to this situation.)

I knew about Norman Borlaug--and I knew when he died last Sunday. When death comes as a not-extremely-shocking time, I don't feel as sad. Not to say I don't have empathy for loved ones/friends of anyone or that it's not tragic when somebody (anybody) dies, but if it wasn't just so tragically out-of-the-blue, I can rationalize it, in a way.

Uh yeah, did you see the way Mother Teresa was basically ignore when she died, while Princess Diana's death was alot bigger. When Mother Teresa did alot more good for this world than Princess Diana x100.

It's a sad fact, but most people would rather be ignorant of people that actually do something for others.

Well, Mother Teresa was a sadist that funneled money from tyrants and despots to build convents and warehouses to watch people die so she could feel closer to god, and Princess Di actually did a considerable amount to raise charity visibility, but anyway, I suppose no one is perfect.

I suppose that simply reflects on how we know a persona, not the person, and sometimes, it's somewhat ugly.

Consider this my vote for no more obituary threads. Unless it's for someone that is actually relevant to the topics on this site. Of course, if they're relevant, they wouldn't end up in the BCS.

And Nick, are you a Penn and Teller fan by any chance? ;)

Penn & Teller, never heard of em...

Image

Though to be fair, I'm sure you're referring to the Holier than thou episode in season 3. I'd read up on her before that, Christopher Hitchen's book on her was pretty eye opening, and the fact that the catholic league more or less confirmed what he said was just frightening. But neither here nor there.

As for killing the obit threads, nah. BCS is designed for this kind of stuff, and we're acting a bit more hand's off. People want to talk about it, let them. Fact is, people like Patrick Swayze and Michael Jackson did affect people lives, even if it was in a smaller way than those like Norman Borlaug or others no one has heard of. Every death is sad, know them or not, we as a society are affected by every death, good or bad.

See, now I'm confused that if you actually think that's Teller or you fail at transmitting sarcasm through the tubes...

I guess I fail at sarcasm. I knew it was you, Nick. Just makin' a funny.

Actually, you look fantastic. You look much better than Patrick Swayze for sure.

That is in fact the episode I was talking about. I just got into BS somewhat recently and finished off season 3 a couple weeks ago.
