Okay, philosophical question time: Does / will / should that Lightening McQueen pictured above count as a minifig?

I guess that would depend on the definition. Lego places a mouse droid as a minifig as well as t
the Dionoga so I assume that a car with eyeballs would meet TLG definition of a minfig.
That being said, based on the recent bounty hunter competition, this would not meet the criteria.

I just showed this to my four-year-old. The first words out of his mouth were "Can I buy that?" with a big grin on his face. His birthday's in May. Perfect.

As much as I want to say minifig, I have to go with Racer based on the size. Now if they made them like penny racers we'd have a true minifig.

Toss up between a new breed of something called "minicar" and LEGO Racer.

I think minicar is closest, since, while I can't really bring myself to call them minifigs, the one we've seen seems more in line with a minifig design ethic than a LEGO Racer design ethic. By which I mean, it doesn't LOOK brick built, it looks like it has a few major components (front, back, side panels, wheels) that are mainly designed to fit together with other similar specialized components to create characters. I just think customizing these will FEEL more like swapping out head, legs, torsos, and hair on a minifig, rather than using standard LEGO pieces to build something different.

I think they're more like creatures, like tauntauns or dragons or ostriches. The fact that they're "people" doesn't really affect that.

I dunno. Creatures are usually even more specialized than this appears to be. You can't really swap any meaningful parts between a Tauntaun and an Dewback. I'll have to wait until we see more of them, but I suspect that you will be able to swap out body parts easily between most of these, with a few of them, due to extremely different body shape or size, falling more into the specialized "creature" feel.
