10242_front_01

Announced today, LEGO is pulling back the curtain on their latest D2C model, 10242 MINI Cooper. Costing just $99.99 (USD), this 1,077 piece will be available starting August 2014. Look for possible VIP early bird access around mid July.

In addition to the usual assets, LEGO has partnered up with social media platform Tongal - which facilitates video content by crowdsourcing creative work through collaborative contests - and three very talented directors to create a series of tongue-in-cheek, spoof videos based on today’s car commercials.

Those three videos as well as the LEGO Designer video are available to view on our YouTube channel and are embedded at the bottom of this post.

i LOVE this. when the rumors surfaced of a mini cooper model i had thought they were going to do the more modern one. but this is spot on to the original euro version one. my wife saw the pic and asked what it was and i said it was a lego mini cooper. then she said, that doesn't even look like lego. and that, i would think, is one of the best compliments that can be given for a lego model. i can't wait for this!

My love for MINIs developed when I had a 2006 MINI Cooper S. When I had that car, I didn't mind a long work commute - it was such a fun driver. It wasn't a powerful car, but that's part of what made it so hilarious; You could be close to red-lining the engine through a couple of gears, and still be under the speed the speed limit. It was so easy to put into tight parking in the city and at the beach, too. I fancied that car so much, I would even dress it up at Halloween as the ECTO-1. It was white, so I put large Ghost Buster door magnets on the doors. I didn't go so far as putting a rack on top and putting a bunch of gizmos on top, but if I had the car long enough, I probably would have. I refer to it in the past tense, because I had to sell it, but I hope to get into another MINI someday. Maybe this LEGO version will tide me over 'til then.

This model looks great. I think LEGO will sell a billion of them. I'm sure every single MINI dealership will have 'em on display and probably, for sale, too.

I have a massive hard-on for anything dark green, so you can imagine how much I want this set. I had been thinking about springing for the Sopwith Camel for a while now (still a great set with ridiculous functionality), but i think I'm going to wait until this comes out. I've lost track of how many times I've thought "I'm 100% getting this" when a new set is unveiled, but this one is a 300% must have for me.

The only problem is that while I'm itching to get my hands on all of those delicious dark green parts (and picnic blanket!!!), it just looks too good as a model to part out. AFOL problems, right?

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

British Racing Green? Steering wheel on the cost side of the car? A goddam Mini Cooper? Look at that profile. I can't wait to see it get customised with rally equipment, and for someone to make a yellow one with an armchair on the roof.

Sploosh! Day one purchase.

That looks great! The Mini is my favourite car. One day, when parking space situation will be a bit better, i will exchange my Smart into a Mini.
And I definitely buy that Lego set :-)

I think they nailed it w/ those commercials too. The starry sky one is my favorite of the three. Well done Lego, well done.

i just saw one of these on my drive to work. exact same green color, white hood. no racing stripe though as far as i could tell; I was too far away. i'll probably start seeing a ton more of them now that the images of this set have entered my brain.

They have been visiting the Mos Eisley Cantina.

My MINI Cooper obsession has me shaking with excitement and I don't even like cars!

I think that might be a beverage called water.

Then I'd be twice as tempted by the parts. "Four dark green windshields are cool, but imagine what I could make with eight!"

This is the curse of being a 100% MOCer, nothing is forever.

Why isn't the whole bottle (dark) blue? Then it would obviously be Harvey's Bristol Cream.

Any thoughts on how the Mini matches up to the VW Camper scale-wise?

Heh, diet water, no calories. That would be funny if the bottle depicted a half-drunk bottle of wine, so there could be a busy-body furor and boycotting of the set.

If you count studs front to back in the photo it's about 30-32 studs MAX. So it's a bit smaller than the camper. I think the Camper if I remember right is about 40ish studs long. While I LOVE this set, it seems like a definite step down on price/value just based on the price and parts vs. the camper. On it's own merit however it's fantastic.

okay i did the math wrong and reversed the order. the mini is indeed worse in terms of value:

vw bus: $119.99 / 1334 parts = 9.0 cents per part
mini cooper: $99.99 / 1077 parts = 9.3 cents per part

but i don't think it's enough of a difference to say it's a definite step down. but if you compare both models to the vw beetle:

vw beetle: $119.99 / 1626 pieces = 7.4 cents per part

now that's a step down. now that i look at the numbers for all three sets, i wonder if this is a trend of a decline in value. makes me wonder how the modular building series is doing
