Darth Vader gets a LEGO® flagship

The 10221 Super Star Destroyer™ Executor is the latest and longest LEGO Exclusive model to join the LEGO Star Wars™ fleet.

BILLUND, Denmark – One of the largest and most powerful vessels in the Star Wars™ universe has been created as a LEGO® Exclusive model. The Super Star Destroyer™ Executor served as command ship at the Battle of Endor and as the personal flagship of Darth Vader.

It is the first time that the classic dagger-shaped design has been produced as an official LEGO model.

"The thing I was trying to accomplish with this model was to get as close as possible to the original, both with angles and the whole profile of the model from the side," says LEGO senior designer Kurt Kristiansen.

His biggest challenge with this model was the sheer size. It is the longest Star Wars model made in LEGO bricks, measuring 124.4 centimetres (50 inches). It consists of 3,152 elements and weighs 3.5kg (8 pounds).

"When I was first given this challenge, my first thought was 'this is going to be a tough one'," he said. He planned the model by dividing it into separate sections before beginning to build at all.

The build also posed a few problems, though: "When you are developing a model, if you change something at one end of, you have to change it all the way down to make it fit. That's a challenge on something this big.

"I think Star Wars fans will love this model because it is the first time ever that the Super Star Destroyer has been made as an official model. The thing that makes this model authentic with the movies is the shape, but also the detail on the top. It is like a small city with streets and alleys."

A section of the top of the model can be removed to show a representation of the command bridge where Darth Vader and the other minifigures can be displayed. The model includes four minifigures: Darth Vader, Admiral Piett, Dengar, Bossk and an extra figure, IG-88.

The Super Star Destroyer is on sale from September 1, 2011 via http://shop.lego.com/ or LEGO Brand Retail Stores. Find your nearest store here: http://stores.lego.com

Hopefully they've learned their lesson and will prevent the sag of death.

Oh man! From blown away, to skeptical, back to blown away!

So they do justice to the underside of the ship, studs up on bottom half is simply a construction feature, not a 6211-esque flip top playset (too bad about a flat bottom, oh well) and there's a nod to the movie scene with just a small removable section for minifigs. Brilliant, if you ask me...something for everyone. This is gonna be a fun build!

I figured it was going to be big, but seeing it with the designer for scale  I don't think I'll be able to afford this one, at least not for a while.

I'm hoping for this as well. Judging by the video, it looks very promising, the lines look arrow straight. This may be a benefit of the studs-up bottom method - a big sandwiched frame instead of a mirrored one.

Holy crap... I try not to drop more than $150 on a single set... but this is making me seriously reconsider.

FAR too expensive for me ... plus, I don't have a shelf long enough to display it ...

I'd like to get the figs though ... is IG-88's head piece printed ?

Awesome. Love the bridge as a little Easter egg. We should all be ashamed of ourselves for bith about the inclusion of the bounty hunters (although Id swap a couple of those guys for a 4-LOM and Zuckuss any day of the week).

$400?!

While the minifig-scale command bridge is a sweet little feature, this set seems pretty lack-luster to me. You're 850 parts short of what the price suggests, and you know that about 1,000 of those parts are all the little greeblies and technic connectors, not specialty parts, printed parts, or otherwise. The only thing this set has going for it is the "WOW" factor for its length (something that the UCS ISD also accomplishes).

As onions pointed out, it probably won't sag as they've got it up on 2 display pillars, so maybe that's the way to go when I rebuild my star destroyer. . .

yeah, it should be priced at $100 less. they missed a HUGE opportunity by not including zuckuss and 4lom. i'm pretty sure they didn't include them because they try not to create new molds for shop@home exclusives. but still, the bridge scene seems so incomplete as it is. i'd rather have no minifigs than one that is half done.

all griping aside, i think the model looks really nice. it really makes obi-wan's fighter look that much worse.

No, price alone would make this a pass for me... even if it was £250, it would still be too much.

Poor show shoehorning those figures in as well.

Hmmm - always liked this ship and this model gets major kudos for size alone. But seriously, who does Lego actually sell these things to? Bankers? Lawyers? Oil tycoons? I mean, if they'd only produced one of these every 5 years then fine, I guess us average plebians could save up for it, but almost every year now they have a $300+ SW set coming out. Also, it's too bad you probably can't put the top back on with the figures standing in the bridge. Kinda makes that feature pointless really. One more thing: why do they keep wasting money on redesinging things they've already done well like Leia's hair and Dengar's torso? Why not spend the production $ on making new printed parts or torsos for brand new figures (hello 4-Lom, Zuckuss...)?

Having been a long time Imperial LEGO fan, it's nice to see another Imperial model coming out. $400 is a lot, but then, so was the $300 for the ISD back in the day. I suppose I really need to save pennies and get my office rebuild and ready for this beast.

I'm mildly surprised a the price. I was expecting more in the area of $300. I guess my expectations are out of whack and should have learned better given the established trend. I like it, don't care about the figures at all, and feel they just pad the price and dilute the set. I'll wait it out and get it for a more reasonable price later.

With the price point - anybody think this will replace the Death Star? IMO they're on two different levels of content, their only things in common are sheer size and price.

lololololololol

At £350, its the smae price as the UCS Falcon, but has 2000 fewer pieces. By god, I'd love to get that set, but there's no way in hell I'm buying it until there's a huge price drop.
Also, although it's generally with the smaller sets, I am shocked how close the international prices are for this. I mention this is the same price as the Falcon, well it is here, but $100 less in the States...... WTF???

I'll be getting it. $400 is pretty steep, but I highly doubt it's going to get any cheaper. The UCS Millenium Falcon, ISD, and Death Star II certainly didn't, and I paid the premium for those. So, in a way, I'll be saving money by getting this right off the bat!
