Build It Yourself: Death Star Ornament

Chris McVeigh (powerpig) constructed this technological terror fit for a Christmas tree. He's even gone one step further and provided LEGO Digital Designer files, a parts list, and instructions on his blog so you can build your own.

Thanks to Matt for the tip.

Pretty cool, I'm going to see if I can sneak 5-6 of these past my wife and onto the Christmas tree.

Hmmm, to dig through and find all the pieces that I'm sure I have or to just order them because I'm lazy...

For what it's worth, you can get one of these for about $7 on BrickLink. Probably even less if you can get everything into one order.

I too love mine. I think the trench is a fantastic idea. Although I had to make a few color substitutions (I don't have anywhere near 20 light gray corner plates, at least, not sorted, and who cares about the color of the travis bricks) it still looks great. Even modded the laser to fire with a green lightsaber blade and matching cone.

Question for meeotch: did you use a 2x2 cone for the laser fire?

No. I don't think they've made a 2x2 cone in any color even approaching appropriate for the laser. I think the closest is sand green. I used a 1x1 cone in trans neon green. While I know that the superlaser fired from points at the very edge of the crater and the 1x1 cone doesn't get anywhere near the edge of the dish, the effect still works for me.

Thanks, meeotch! It will still be a great finishing touch, so I'm gonna give it a whirl. Great idea, sir!
