Lego Reveals 75059 Sandcrawler

Postby Staff » Fri Mar 07, 2014 11:52 pm

Update: We received the following message regarding the change in the packaging design:

The decision has been made to change the packaging for future “LEGO® exclusive” Star Wars™ sets to include the UCS seal and de-link from the core Star Wars packaging. In addition to the packaging change an update has been made to the building instructions. The building instructions will have additional pages detailing the model’s connection to the movie and its development process. Much as the Creator Expert badge differentiates the larger models from the core assortment the goal of this change is to better communicate to builders that these sets represent our biggest building challenge in the LEGO® Star Wars™ theme.

Well, the poorly kept secret we all knew (it's listed on "exclusive sets" at Lego Stores that aren't eligible for discounts) but knew nothing about is now official and out there. Announced at Bricks Cascade in Portland, OR, and featuring the designer video above, there's certainly a lot to like in the set. Brickset has the press release for the set, along with the picture below, and... well, look at it!

75059-1

75059 Sandcrawler is the next in that line of that "not really UCS but priced like UCS, so we call it UCS" that has given us winners like the Death Star and Ewok Village. Coming out in May and weighing in at $299, this isn't a cheap set, but certainly one that will see plenty of demand.

The original Sandcrawler was a strange beast. It's one of those sets that I never got around to getting, despite seeing it in stores several times, discounted on Amazon and Lego a lot, and available for sale for years. I had nothing against the sets, I just didn't feel that a few Jawas made it worthwhile for all of that brown. This one is an improved design that goes from a big chunk of brown to an actual, factual playset.

Plus, there's now another set to get the new R2-D2 in (assuming you aren't going to drop the $25 on the Jedi Interceptor), as well as a couple of other astromechs, some brick-built droids, a new Gonk, Jawas, and Uncle Owen (no word if there's a charred carcass to put somewhere). Take a look at the full press release for some of the details. Hopefully, we'll get some better pictures as Lego gets more information out there.

Certainly looks impressive though far from the cuusoo version we saw. It does seem to be a big upgrade from the previous version and hopefully the floor will be better built as the first one suffered the same design flaws of the ISD. Could always use more Jawas. Lightsaber is a little out of place for the set unless Luke is going to cut into it's underbelly.

Some things look improved over the previous version (leaner more accurate shape, slightly less gaudy colour scheme, better rear engine detail, better unique droid minifigs), while some things look worse than the original (cockpit windows suck, possibly less interior space and the fact the whole thing is plate/technic built makes it less pure Lego in my mind than the classic all brick built design of the original). I would argue the original was a better playset due to the ability to remove the central section for full interior access. This one looks like it could be quite fragile in parts. Also, that price is extremely prohibitive. Not sure who's buying these things at full retail outside of the bankers and oil barons.

While I'm excited for this, it's a HUGE disappointment to me that there is no Aunt Beru minifigure. It's not a deal breaker by any means, but it's extremely disheartening that Lego would miss such an obvious opportunity to include that character.

"not really UCS but priced like UCS, so we call it UCS"

Heh, that is kind of my thoughts, at least initially. I have always liked the Sandcrawler vehicle so I will end up getting this...eventually. This is bigger than the original, but not by a huge margin. This is very detailed and has quite a large amount of functions and minifigures included. My first impression was that it is way too expensive and the studs out technique does not make it feel very Sandcrawler-ish. All those studs on the side is a bit off-putting. However, the more I have looked at this the more I like it; the overall design is closer to the movie and the colors also look better. I don't think anyone could have expected this to be anything close to the one Marshal Banana built that the Cusoo idea was based on; his was just so amazing. I wish I had instructions to build his version.

Not keen on the excessive facial features for Luke and Uncle Owen. Starting to look a bit odd like those NBA Lego minifigures.

Agreed. For some reason in the past year LEGO's grown really fond of a lot of small tan and black lines to create facial expressions- the intent appears to be to create detail, but it ends up just making them look old. So it works wonders for an aged face like Gandalf's, or a more rugged look like Han, but just falls flat on its face for minifigures like Luke, Black Widow, etc.

So that makes about $1150 worth of stuff I "need" to pick up solely in the category of large (over 1500 pieces) Star Wars sets. I am simultaneously happy and sad.

This one isn't "I MUST HAVE THIS NOW" like the Ewok Village was or anything, but still probably something I'll buy. I'm sure we'll get a review together for it to let everyone know just how much we can make fun of it...

They need to calm down with the detail on the licensed minifigures. Luke's suffering from some severe "handsome Squidward" with that chin butt. 3P0 has a bit of silver leg detailing, but it just stops at the "knee," so it's more of a silver knee pad. Look at all those great droids that I can't afford. *Sigh.*

The Sandcrawler itself looks awesome. Way out of my price range, but it looks like a fantastic design and a fun build.

I agree completely. Luke looks more like Peter Cushing then Mark Hamill for sure. And Uncle Ben, well...

I had thought that Lego was going to get away from the UCS theme? I guess I can see from the clarification that Lego wants to put the UCS logo to set it apart from the other SW theme line. I guess the price alone was not a big enough give-away?

I am not a big fan of all the exposed studs on this. It really looks god awful IMO. And as many others have already stated, why does Luke have a lightsaber? Also not a big fan of the dirt or whatever is on his face.

Where did you hear that Lego was going away from the UCS stuff?

Are you aware that had we got something even close to that the set would have cost hundreds upon hundreds more?

Anyhow, the set looks great. I want it. I'm sure I'll buy it, even if I'm not sure when.
The biggest thing though, I really can't get over how nice the box looks. If they'd always looked that good I can't imagine ever getting rid of one. 7191 UCS X-Wing is still my favourite, but this is near the top.

Agreed on all points. This is likely a "pass" for me due to the cost. If it was $200, I might consider it. But $300 MSRP is a little too high. I have the original, and it still sitting in unopened bags, b/c I could never find display space for a big brown box on treads. Glad Lego is doing these larger playsets, but this one's just not for me. ;)

Are there any high res images of this set yet? Also, why did htey give Luke a lightsabre? He didn't have one when until he met Obi Wan.
