LEGO at Borders (In the future)

Postby DarthMC » Sat Jan 15, 2011 12:46 pm

Not really a find as much as a future find. Want to my local Borders in MD to see if there was anything worth using the latest 33% off coupon on and noticed the LEGO section was pretty much wiped out. It looked like they didn't even get in a Dec. shipment for Christmas. Asked if they would get any more in (they have been having money problems) and was surprised to see lots of new sets had been ordered and should be arriving soon. Looks like all the new 2011 StarWars (T6 was 74.99), NinjaGo, HP sets etc were on order. The most amusing however was minifig series 4 which had a March arrival date.

Awesome news. I had wondered. I asked one of my local Borders and they made it sound like the HP stuff was special just for the holiday season and that Borders wouldn't be doing it again. Now if we can just get some 40% offs to pair with those new sets.

If you have any Borders gift cards, I'd suggest using them now. They are probably going into Chapter 11:

Glad I didn't sign up for the Rewards Plus program.

Ordered $50 worth of Borders gift cards from my wife's Discover card cash back bonus reward, guess I'll try to use them up fast so I'm not stuck with them, like I got stuck with KB Toys gift card when they went under.

Ther are two stores in Wichita, I'll use the cards and coupon to get the Slave I if it's available.

this has to be ymmv. i have three borders within driving distance and they have vastly different lego/toy stock. it is most likely up to the discretion of the employee in charge of that store area.

that said, i will be thrilled to find more HP legos if they appear at mine!

I had heard a rumor about Borders going out of business before Christmas of 2009. As a result, my wife and I gave out Barnes and Nobles gift cards during the holidays that year. I had been waiting all of 2010 for Borders to go under but they're still around.

I think an official company spokesperson directly telling a major international news organization that they may be restructuring qualifies as a bit more than "rumor":

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6BT4HJ20101231

That said, Chapter 11 doesn't mean they will go under. However, if they are no longer paying suppliers, I would tend to doubt that TLG would continue to supply them with product. So, the stock that Borders has in their stores and warehouses RIGHT NOW is probably the best they are going to have for a very long time. If you have gift cards, use them now to get the best selection. If you wait, they may not have anything you want later.

I got a Darth Vader's Tie Fighter using a 33% coupon and by gold membership at a Borders in Louisville last week on a business trip. Noticed that they also had a V-19 in stock I think it had a 64.99 price tag.

Well i stopped by my local Borders today, and to some relief I saw one of the '11 SW sets, the Bounty Hunter Assault Ship, it was priced at $62.99 I believe. This is a bit of good news, considering the uncertain financial situation of the franchise. I believe I saw the new police boat as well. Hopefully they will get some other SW sets in, as well as some Pharaoh's Quest.

They also had a box of series 3 minifigs up front, still at $3.99

On a side note, stopped into Meijer's tonight and found two partial boxes of series 3 figs, i wanted to double check the price, since I found them before christmas at $1.99- now they are the dreaded $2.99. I have 4 to go then i can safely say im out after that, way too expensive for how little you get, and the quality of the figs

At 62.99 using there currently common 33% off coupon and a gold membership you can get the ship for like 38 or 25% off current list. Not to bad but not low enough to peak my interest in that kit.

Here's a summary of what's been spotted in Borders recently, by myself and others:

$3.99 (MSRP $2.99; 33% markup)
8803 CMFv3

$5.99 (MSRP $4.99; 20% markup)
2516 Ninja Training Outpost
7305 Scarab Attack

$9.99 (MSRP $7.99; 25% markup)
2141 Surge 2.0
2142 Breez 2.0
2063 Stormer 2.0
2065 Furno 2.0

$11.99 (MSRP $9.99; 20% markup)
5929 Knight and Castle Building Set
5930 Road Construction Building Set
7306 Golden Staff Guardians
2113 Zane (and other spinners)
7279 Police Minifigure Collection

$14.99 (MSRP $12.99; 15% markup)
7285 Police Dog Unit
5763 Dune Hopper

$17.99 (MSRP $14.99; 20% markup)
2259 Skull Motorbike

$19.99 (MSRP $16.99; 18% markup)
5764 Rescue Robot

$23.99 (MSRP $19.99; 20% markup)
5765 Transport Truck
2260 Ice Dragon Attack
7286 Prisoner Transport
7307 Flying Mummy Attack

$34.99 (MSRP $29.99; 17% markup)
7325 Cursed Cobra Statue
7929 Battle of Naboo (MSRP is actually only $24.99, making it 40% markup)

$44.99 (MSRP $39.99; 13% markup)
7287 Police Boat

$54.99 (MSRP $44.99; 22% markup)
7288 Mobile Police Unit

$62.99 (MSRP $49.99; 26% markup)
2504 Spinjitzu Dojo
7930 Bounty Hunter Gunship

$129.99 (MSRP $99.99; 30% markup)
21005 Fallingwater

Assuming you're using 33%, 40%, or 50% coupons, the best deals appear to be the police boat, Cursed Cobra Statue, Rescue Robot, police dog unit, and dune hopper. The Naboo one is marked up 40%. Hopefully they start stocking some of the other new Star Wars sets (and without the huge markup). Would love to see the Scorpion Pyramid too. I find it interesting they are starting to sell the architecture sets, which previously only seemed to appear in Barnes and Noble stores. I didn't see the Fallingwater set myself, but someone else reported spotting it at that price.

yeah i figured that math out today, figuring in the 33% off plus my additional border plus 10%. I would have to agree, because at $50, its a hard sell, since this is a ridiculously small set for the price, but im a sucker for the figs

also super disappointing to hear about battle of naboo- i would love to have grabbed another at a discounted price, but $10 over....for a set at a relatively low cost, that is an absolute rip off. I'll only grab another if we get another rare 50% off...

Just got an Email with another %40 off coupon. It is good through Monday.

Saw everything sidersdd listed previously except the v-wing instead of the Naboo set. Still no Potter sets however. :(

If you have gift cards, use them soon. They have not been paying their suppliers and If they declare bankruptcy, gift cards become worthless.

Well I finally picked up the t-6 for $43 after both discounts, roughly 30% off MSRP. After the build I was actually quite surprised by how much I enjoy the design, very sleak, very swooshable. For that price its golden, especially for the two new jedi, but $60 is nuts. Hopefully I will see the v-wing soon... but im sure they will list it at $30...

Thanks, I suppose that isn't as bad, but I find it strange that the stock is varying so much between store locations. The only two new SW sets mine have is the t-6 and the bounty hunter assault ship. With last weeks 40% off i grabbed up a stray, clone trooper battle pack (2009 pack with simple white clones) as well as the bounty hunter set. Hopefully I will see the v-wing soon

My local paper said that sales could start as earlier as saturday but I have not been by the one that was closing yet. Given that they have 2 stores not closing also within like 6 miles they might not fire sale the contents of that store. Have to be at least 46% off their prices to be better than what I have already passed up at that store though.
