My Cars 3 10-second Review

Postby Staff » Mon Jun 19, 2017 9:56 am

Cars 3 opened this weekend, and judging by its box office numbers ($53.6 domestic), a lot of people saw it, including yours truly. But enough of the intro, here is my 10-second, spoiler-free review:

Go see it. It's good enough to make you forget that that steaming pile of crap known as Cars 2 ever existed. Cars 3 is spiritually the true sequel to the original movie and makes a fine movie-going experience. While the Cars franchise isn't ranked very highly by most Pixar fans or movie critics alike, it is one of my favorites and this one does not disappoint.

Should I have the kids watch the original Cars before we go? I'm assuming they'll be OK skipping Cars 2.

Yes and yes. Though not entirely necessary, there are references to the Doc Hudson character in 3 that will be more meaningful if you watch the first one. And yes, skip Cars 2 altogether.

Don't forget to watch Toy Story 3, because they cribbed a major plot element from that as well (and if they pull the same move whenever they get around to making The Incredibles 3, I'll be pissed).

It's all right. Not great, but not the dinosaur film by a long shot. Cars 2 is still better if you can manage to wrap your head around the fact that it's not trying to pull a Forced Remake and carbon copy the previous film but bigger and "better". The C2-specific cars are also a heck of a lot more interesting than the new batch. So, right now, I've got minifig-scale MOCs of Lightning, Todd the Pizza Planet Truck, Holley Shiftwell (both ground and flying), Rod "Torque" Redline, Grem, and Acer. I'm working on a design for Mater, plan to add Sally, and might throw in a few others from the first film (and _maybe_ another Lemon from the second) for kicks and giggles, but there really aren't any characters from C3 that I care about enough to make the effort.

you might be the only person in the world to think that Cars 2 was better. i respect your opinion and your guts to admit that out loud.

Eh, I remember a time when I was the only person who would admit hating the Macarena, too.
