What's New in Lego CITY

Though we don't cover them in detail on FBTB, we all still love our Castle, Pirates, and Space LEGO too.

What's New in Lego CITY

Postby Staff » Wed Feb 13, 2013 12:03 am

Continuing our flood of leftover Toy Fair coverage: the new Lego CITY assortment is ready to go. Almost half the sets include an aircraft and you can't seem to go near the water without getting attacked by a shark so clearly things are as exciting as ever. There's a new large prefabbed cockpit section in two of those which the boxes highlight as a positive aspect on account of the easier construction, and a new large floating boat hull for those that love to take their sets for a swim. Also, nearly a decade after it was last included in any sets, the white shark is finally back!

Notably absent from the entire lineup are buildings in any form.

Obvious spoiler alert for anyone planning on getting the Advent Calendar: you'll probably want to avoid that last gallery.

OK I guess the air traffic control tower would count as a building. Whatever. Still seems like an odd choice.

Sharks are cool, but what about dolphins? Dolphins would be much more useful for sci-fi dioramas, because dolphins are aliens. Also, LEGO dolphins are kinda rare. It'd be cool to see them in a new set.

Nifty, but the eyelashy, my little pwny eyes of the Friends dolphins is going to somewhat subvert my serious sci-fi intended use for them. Okay, semi-serious. 1/4 serious?

Just give them goggles. Bam. All kinds of sci-fi vibes.

Put a laser on its head. Anything with a laser automatically qualifies as sci-fi. Or at least a flick fire missile.

Too bad it's not the sharks from the agents. Would have liked another crack at them.

Yeah, those sharks with studs on top (for mounting frickin' lasers) and the ability to swallow a minifig whole were awesome. I see that the new Coast Guard sets are using the "classic" shark design. Anyone know why?

I think that is a new white shark with the Coast Guard helicopter... take a look at the product images:

I don't think the old sharks had gills, but there are no studs like on the Agents one. Am I crazy?

(The toy show photos above do show the old shark, with no gills)

Yeah, I noticed the changes in the shark in the pictures.

However, I bought the Coast Guard Helicopter set and, despite the box images, the set came with the old shark design.

Still hoping that someday they will produce more of the sharks from the Agents line.

Interesting. The old sharks certainly didn't have those gills. I'm very curious how the final product will look next to the original version, that might not be the only minor change they tossed in.
