FBTB 3.0: Your feedback here!

It's like the old BCS, except the 2.0 makes it fancy. Wondering why you can't post here? Check out the rules and expectations, and it all should be made clear...

Don, you should know by now that we can not deal with change. Maybe you should start being a jerk again, just to see how it works with the adoring fans.

Although the "more fun threads, d00dz!" thing might be valid, perhaps expecting them from the staff within a couple weeks of launching a brand new site and forums is a tad bit unrealistic...? An 11-page thread with a lot of changes being requested is sign enough that they're busy behind the scenes managing all those requests. (And then there's being tied up at nabbing us weenies all the wonderful ToyFair coverage, as well.)

For whatever it's worth, I've definitely noticed a change in attitude for the better. There are a lot more "Thanks for asking, but this has been answered– but while you're here, check thread XYZ out for answers" instead of "Quit asking, stoopeeed!" responses. ;) The place genuinely seems friendlier and more helpful.

It seems like threads are being locked because they're either a) answered and closed or b) irrelevant or "not allowed"– I do believe that's how it should be. There seems to be a much more refined system in place instead of letting threads derail. I really like the fact that more are being closed as questions are answered because it keeps things concise and to the point without wandering off into drivel. Questions are asked, discussed, and then closed out to allow for new discussions to emerge. Clean and to the point.

So it's only been what, a week or two? Give everyone time to get used to everything first before demanding more fun and less housekeeping, once hiccups and kinks have been straightened out.

On a small sidenote, I have to say I really like the relaxed RtB policy. Whether we'll admit to it or not, a lot of us "RtB"ed here and then just went off to another site to peek at the upcoming set images. That didn't promote FBTB loyalty, that just sent people elsewhere... I've found that knowing I'll be able to view and talk about upcoming sets here keeps me, shockingly, here. It's nice.

No Mods don't change! You did such a great work with setting up the forum and dealing with all these little problems in the last week.
It has to settle and then we all will have all the fun the great community of FBTB deserves.

I noticed that, how you were being polite and helpful and all. Well done to you, sir. Why people complain about some things I really have no idea...

Hey, when will the spotlight be back up because I recieved the parts I ordered from bricklink to build Gareth's UCS jedi starfighter. There were instructions in Gareth's model shop. If the spotlight wont be up soon could someone post them for me please, THanks.

Regarding the whole "omg the mods have sticks up their bums" thing. I think Morgan understands what's going on because he's been in our shoes. His post is a better explanation than anything I could ever write up. Yes, we're very focused on working out the kinks on the site and forum. Yes, posts are being locked, but read them again: the issues addressed in them are cleared up or will shortly be taken care of either publically or privately. There's no maliciousness on the part of staff anywhere that I can see. Maybe a little frazzled, sure, because of the stress of site work (Ace, NIck and Don did an incredible amount of work getting things like the set database (yes, I know it isn't up yet) and news archive parsed over) and real life (Austin is sick, I'm juggling school, a job, two internships, and a family!) But I think we're doing a pretty good job of not taking it out on anyone here.

Master Fetty wrote:Am I the only one who thinks the Set Review decription is too long? I know its so that everyone understands the rules, but no one really reads them anyway. It just makes the site look less organised than it should.

I concurred, and shortened it. There's already a stickied Guidelines thread within that forum so the excessive forum description was redundant.

We don't know when the spotlight will be back up yet because its not our top priority right now but rest assured we will update a spotlight section with old and new models alike in fact I have several emails worth of material from Gareth that are quite impressive and might send you back to Bricklink for more shopping. *breathes*

I completely agree with Morgan. The staff is doing a great job with the new site. And I agree, that the relaxing of the RTB policy, does promote better site loyalty.

On another note, I'd like to say that I'm glad to see the review section back. That was the one section that I wasn't happy about losing, so its nice to see it return.

Wow, my meaning has been entirely misconstrued here. I'm not saying the mods have "sticks up their butts" or anything of the like. If you go back and re-read my post, you'll notice that I simply pointed out that the mods have been too busy fixing the site to post "for fun." That's a good thing. I'm glad everyone's doing their best to improve the quality of the site. My point was, things won't really get back to "normal" around here until you guys are all done with that and start posting normally again.

And Don, the reason I was singling you out was not because you'd been doing anything bad or wrong. Quite the contrary. I have noticed you being nicer (although personally I'm just wondering if it's a ploy to lure noobies into some elaborate trap). I was actually stating that you were the exception to the rule, and I've seen more posting "for fun" from you than any of the other mods. I do appreciate the kinder, gentler Don. Don't go changing because of anything I said (never has there been a worse reason to do something than that :D).

So yes, I do appreciate the mods hard work and dedication. I'm just anxious for everything to return to normal so that the old shenanigans can begin.

For "View active topics" and "View new posts"
Could message lists use Left, Center and Right align for the "by <name>", "date" and "in <forum>"?

Some thing like:
Code: Select all
by "user name" »                 Wed Feb 18, 2009 4:07 pm                           in Ask LEGO

Ah well, I know you try, as do all the mods here. However, when I say school teacher I don't mean courteous. I shudder to think of some of the schoolteachers I've had. Please do not be a full-on prick, just be rational as you are now but try and let your hair (I know you have plenty) down as well. Unlike how Morgan phrases it, I don't think most of us (and definitely not I) want "more fun threads, d00dz". I don't think threads should be used to ask questions that have been answered over and over, but rather to provide fruitful discussion and sharing amongst the community.

I still don't understand what you think the staff is doing wrong... we're locking the threads with questions that are getting asked over and over, and we're herding all the cats in here towards more fruitful discussions.

Don,

I don't think you're doing anything wrong as a mod. You guys are perfectly justified doing everything you have been doing.

My main point is, as mods, you basically have two kinds of posts: posts related to mod duties (locking threads, keeping people in line, etc...) and regular "fun" posts (expressing opinions, sharing MOCs, etc...). However, since this is the beginning of a new forum, we see a lot more of the former and fewer of the latter coming from the mods (except, as I pointed out earlier, you).

The solution isn't to stop making "mod posts" (that'll only lead to problems), rather, the solution is to make more "fun posts." The best way to lead is by example. So yes, be stern when the situation calls for it, but start enjoying the fruits of you labor. You've earned it.

To be fair, my "for fun" posts had been scaled back well before we launched the new forums. It's not that I enjoy LEGO less or don't like the forums, it's simply that my time has become in more demand and I can't really browse the forums at work like I used to (since switching to my current job, back in April). Of course, I have an iPhone now, but I'm still busy, so usually I'm just browsing, reading, and doing mod'ly things when needed. This affects my building time as well (and to be fair, having a World of Warcraft habit doesn't help).

As was stated earlier, expecting the staff to put the "fun" into the forums isn't realistic. While it'd be awesome if we could just step back and enjoy ourselves, that's neither practical nor possible. We can contribute, laugh, goof off, but there's always something there that we need to do and watch. Unlike everyone else, we don't have the luxury of just backing out of threads we don't like... we have to read them all. Yeah, sometimes that sucks the fun out of things, but what can you do. It's a sacrifice we all happily make to keep the place running. It's not glamorous, but if anyone wants some examples of what forums look like without moderators or admins, I can provide some. It's the digital version of drunk chick vomit on your eyes...

Another aspect is that a lot of us are still working on the site and features, getting things ready and balancing our lives around it. Keep in mind that all of the staff members are adults balancing family, jobs, and in some cases, school. A lot of times that means we can't do a lot of posting, especially when we're doing things like reading, sifting, and even the occasional building.

Oh, and remember, you think Don is being mean, I can always go back to locking and tearing people apart, instead of just locking and not saying anything...
If the above post didn't offend you, you're probably reading it wrong.
