[NEW UPDATES!] Portal 2 announced, I need to change my pants

The simple, short version: we're getting our sequel. Game Informer has some sweet teaser images too. ****. Yes.

Now you know Portal as well as I do, and you know Valve... so you know it's never simple. Notice that the Steam announcement has random characters underlined? Yeah. That's a login and password to some bulletin board. There's a whole slew of people tweaking away at this already. The recent update to the game included some oddly named wave files which turned out to have CCTV images hidden in them, there's a bunch of ascii images from the bbs login, and apparently a bunch of gibberish is actually a proprietary image format that can be interpreted in basic. Needless to say, I'm effin lost. The people who know what's going on, or at least are figuring it out as they go along, are updating this wiki.

Oh, and they modified the ending to the first game.

Details I've gleaned so far: the release date is possibly October 22 this year, GlaDos survived (we knew that from her song though, but now we know her "body" wasn't destroyed), and this time we will get to use the portal gun outside, and there might be a co-op mode.

Modified the ending? How? And does that mean if I play it again, I will SEE a modified ending instead, or just that they are SAYING that what we saw at the end of the first game isn't what really happened?

I just hope that it this sequel isn't a totally different type of game than the original. Mainly my concern is that it might become more graphically violent than the first, which was essentially a puzzle game (with occasional splashes of blood, but no living enemies and no gore to speak of).

Not that there is anything intrinsically wrong with such a game, but it isn't my personal preference, and I loved the first Portal, so I want to be able to enjoy a sequel. (And my 9-year old son can play Portal, and I'd like to be able to let him play a sequel as well.)

Again, so nobody jumps all over me for condemning "gorier" games, I'm not. I just don't personally enjoy them, or want my kids playing them at this age, and hope that the sequel to a game both I and my son enjoyed doesn't shift tone so much that we can no longer enjoy it.

You can't please everyone, and the expectations for this are obviously high. If it's more of the same, it'll be torn apart as just rehashing the first game. If it's different, it will be lambasted for abandoning the heart of the game. If it's a mix of those, well, you're just going to piss off both camps.

I've actually been replaying it, and it is kind of cool. Throughout the game there are 26 radios hidden (well some are more hidden than others), and if you find them all and carry them to certain locations they pick up mysterious signals, and you complete a new achievement. The signals themselves actually have meaning, but deciphering it is beyond my capabilities. I'm just having fun looking for all the radios.
