My friend just told me that straight after he cut the cord, he was given a detailed appraisal of the placenta by one of the nurses; going through all the different parts to check the health of mother and baby. The geeky part of me really wants to do that!!

Having 3 kids is the biggest reason don't post as often as I used to! No time!! I am on the computer at home 10 minutes a day. At work, that's a little different.

But, seriously, try to be the best dad you can be and don't be a father. There is a difference, IMO. I had a father, it sucked. I had a great mom, thou! I want to be a dad. You get what I am trying to say?

Any man can be a father, it takes a real man to be a dad!

Congratulations! I have an 8 month old daughter myself, and couldn't imagine my life without her now. Some advice on the birth: if you stay close to your wife's head (and away from the "equator area") it is possible to witness the birth without inadvertently seeing any "scary nether region stuff"... and if you say "Oh god no!" when they ask if you want to cut the cord... they'll do it for you.

Congrats, Ace! While I think the name Leia is cool, just be aware that you might change your mind at the last minute.

I was gonna name my son Trevor (after my favourite hockey player), but a month before his birth, my coworker also had a son and named him Trevor! So I named him Brendan instead (another hockey player, and as a result he shares my initials: BMW). He didn't really "look" like a Trevor anyway.

Other than that, you are going to feel like the most useless person in the room. There is nothing you can do to take the pain of your wife giving birth away. Just go with the flow and do everything the nurses tell you.

And you're right, the umbilical cord was quite tough to cut through.
