Sega Genesis 20th Aniversary

Postby RocketClone » Mon Sep 07, 2009 5:30 pm

Yes its been 20 years since the Sega genesis first went on store shelves and into peoples households.
After the the unsucessful SEGA master system completed its run sega cranked up another system the SEGA Genesis,And im sure many of you remember the 16 bit console wars of the 90s(i do)espically those Genesis does what nintendont commercials. After the Genesis completed it's run the SEGA CD and then the SEGA saturn both being unsucessful and then the dreamcast being sucessful and then in 2003 SEGA made no more more consoles not keeping up with the competion.

So right now i also make this thread to dicuss what your first Genesis game or experence(or both).

There you have it!

Heh, I would never expect this to pop up here.

If I remember correctly, I first got into the Genesis the same way I got into the NES and SNES. I had been interested in an old series of games (Ghosts 'n Goblins) and had heard one game was on the Sega Genesis. I promptly downloaded an emulator and played to my heart's content. After that, it wasn't 'till I discovered Screwattack and their top 20 lists that I ever expanded the library. I hardly use the emulator anymore, as I now have both a Mark I and Mark II (Though I'm trying to sell the Mark II).

Some of my favorite games would have to be Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Ghostbusters, Comix Zone, Moonwalker, and Gunstar Heroes. Overall, it's a really great consol; a shame it's overlooked by other, more prominent consoles.

Still Play mine from time to time. Sonic 2 is still a good day waster, when I don't have anything pressing to do. Star Control is one I don't have anymore, but my buddies and I would play that all the time back in the day. It got more and more interesting as players would feel the effects of the beer kicking in. Those were some good times, taking that game to my friends house in Riverside, and then having tournaments. We had to draw straws for the more popular ships in that game.

Genesis was the first console I ever had. I played Sonic 2 endlessly as a child.

I remember my brother an me saving up and buying a Genesis from Funcoland (now defunct). I remember playing Sonic 1, Mortal Kombat 2 and NBA Jam: Tournament Edition (Oh, My! He's on FIRE!!!). We never got too many more games (My brother had a few other sports games) because we got into it quite late and I eventually moved on to the N64.

For those of you interested in playing Genesis games in a legal manner, many are available for download via Nintendo's Virtual Console service. Most of the great games are availble like Sonic 1-3, Gunstar Heroes, Ecco the Dolphin, Golden Axe I-III, Phantasy Star II-IV, Ghouls and Ghosts, and many others. They're usually around $8 US, which, when compared to the "collector's" value of some of their respective carts, is quite a good deal. Many will argue the Gamecube Sonic compilation disc is a better deal, and I won't argue the fact, so think about your different options before making your decision.

My all-time favorite Genesis game is Warsong, hands-down. Anyone else here even play it? It's on the Wii VC in Japan, but hasn't come out here yet. It was not a very popular game when it was released for Genesis, but was part of a very popular series in Japan. (Langrisser I think.)

Sonic & Knuckles + Sonic 3 were great, too.

Of course, for those of us who don't have a Wii, it'd also mean throwing down 250 bucks to even have the VC.

In all seriousness, though, it's actually probably cheaper to just buy the original games. Genesis consoles can be very cheap (I got both of mine for 10 dollars), and the games vary from 2-10 dollars, depending on the store and/or game. Granted, more places sell a Wii than the ones that would sell a Genesis, but it's really not too hard to find one somewhere. Even if the games are a little more expensive then the VC prices, there's still a lot of extra money between the 250 dollars to buy a Wii, and the average 40-50 dollars to buy a complete Genesis.

Your analysis is more or less true if you are buying the Wii strictly to play Genesis games. But even then you need to take into account factors like old HW not working properly, dying batteries in the cartridges, etc. But setting that aside, the fact that buying a Wii also opens up opportunities to buy NES, SNES, N64, Master System, and NEO-GEO games makes it really seem silly to invest money in old hardware and games. I do understand the appeal of having the "real thing", though.

Personally, I sold all my old hardware (Genesis, SNES, N64, etc) and games, bought back my favorite games on Wii, and still had a lot of money left over. :D

Yeah, but they still haven't released all the games or even all the popular games from the Genesis or NES, Super NES, or any other system. There is so much missing from the VC that it makes you want to just keep your old systems till they either release them if you have the Wii, or if they ever release them.

Yea but when you see the VC games itll either be missing something(eg:colors are different, cheats dont work etc)or the controls might be different than how you playd them from back in the day.

I haven't noticed that in any of the games I've played, but I'm sure it's possible.

And to the point that not all of the games are there - very true. In my case, all the games I would have wanted to play again were already on the VC, so I sold everything.

I've only ever had a problem with the NES not working correctly, every other console (and game) works perfectly for me. Also, I was including the other console games as well in my analysis (Well, with the exception of NEO-GEO, SMS N64, I don't play those consoles). Currently, I have a SNES, NES, and Genesis, as well as over half the games I would ever buy with a VC, all for about 100 dollars less then the cost of even buying a Wii to begin with. To me, the VC only really makes sense if you're buying a Wii for other reasons as well; buying it just for the VC just seems rather dumb and costly given the alternative.

I won't deny that there are pros to the VC, games are less likely to break down, some really popular games can be loads cheaper on the VC than the original cartride; but overall, I think in the long run it's just better to play on the original console.

The NES is known for having a problem where it'll blink on and off consitently when turned on. Fidgeting around with the cartridge tends to have it play the game. Mine just broke recently, so I have to replace the 72-pin connector. Other then that, though, I've never had problems with my older games.

Well, apparantly I hijacked this thread and turned it into a VC discussion thread. All is going according to my master plan. >:)

The reason I prefer the VC over the "real thing" really comes down to convenience. Sure, I could spend time at Ebay, used game shops, and garage sales tracking down classic games. But I like the simplicity of buying all the various games from one place from the ease of my couch. Plus, I don't have to clutter up my entertainment system with 7 systems with their daisy-chained rc adapter cords cluttering things up (not to mention the power strips needed). This way, I only need one gaming system to play games from several. Oh, and don't get me started on all the required corded controllers. The ability to use a single (wireless) controller for so many different systems is a thing of God-like elegance. (In case you haven't figured it out yet, I have a thing against cords.)

Additionally, I don't need to blow on cartridges and wiggle them around while praying to the videogame gods for them to work. I don't need to worry about loose analog sticks or sticky, worn-out buttons.

I know there will always be opponents of digital distribution, those who have this intense urge to have something "in hand," and I feel sorry for them, I really do. We are moving into an era where digital distribution is becoming the norm. It's something PC gamers have long used and appreciated, and now the consoles are catching up. Games can be patched with automatic downloads. New content can be downloaded with a few clicks. These things are good. In fact, as my good friend Tony would say, they're greeeeeeeeeeat!
