I've never bought any of the "New Essential" guides but Legomancer gave it a thumbs up, so I thought I'd check it out. Plus the odds of regrettable Star Wars purchase are generally pretty low in my book.

The original Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels has a lot of stuff that's not in the "new" version. It also has better projections and it's black & white (so some details are easier to see). I have both books, and use both when I can (old for details and scale, new for color and 3/4 views).

I'd just like to comment on how much I'm liking this contest. Most of the models shown would fit beautifully into an expanded Midi-scale lineup of Starwars vehicles. It was too bad that TLG didn''t pursue this size of model more, despite what seemed to be a poor reception of the 2 official models that were released (likely due to being overpriced). The great thing about this size of models is that they are instantly recognizable and can easily be displayed without taking up a huge amount of space on a desk or shelf like the minifig scale sets do.

I'm pretty sure that's what the planet series sets are meant to be. Some are just a bit smaller than microfig scale, so they kinda do what you are talking about. That being said, I think some of the entries to the contest blow some of the official TLG sets out of the water. It never ceases to amaze me the level of skill and imagination of creations in contests on this site.

Here is my microfig scale Desert Skiff for entering "Palpatine's Shrink-o-matic Ray Contest".

First time I've built anything for this scale, so it was a fun experience using items I wouldn't ordinarily think of using! Apologies for the base, but I wanted to give the impression of flying.

Luke is the yellow minifig, Han the red, Chewie the maroon, and Lando the blue. The prison guards are grey, including the skiff pilot.

Madlegoman: Genius! I was hoping someone would do that: I think it works because of the fact that it is piloted standing up. Nicely done!

Aside from that, the Chibi style is really super successful...I fear I missed the boat on that one, by just trying to build to scale. No matter. I just love seeing the creativity of all entrants! Good work fellas.
