If you're just getting back into building that might be a good set to start with and you can modify it to your liking. If you're going hardcore and want a perfectly minifig scale Herc, you my friend are going to need a lot of grey parts.
This is probably not the best advice to give but you could look to non Lego sets for some ideas. Character Building actually released a set based on this as part of their HM Armed Forces line. But still it ain't Lego and even it has some serious faults in its design.
Start with referencing as much as possible about the plane and begin on the engines for a small build and some instant gratification. While doing this you could look at other lego solutions to creating the nose and windscreen area and check as many plane parts lego produce that may help you.
