Build a Psiaki X-wing Yourself

X-wing plans

Mike “Psiaki” is a name you should be familiar with. He’s been featured on here a few times in the past, most recently for his X-wing MOC. He’s been gracious enough to give back to the community by providing building instructions for his X-wing on his Brickshelf account. There’s no parts list but the pictures should be clear enough to figure out what you’ll need step by step. Thanks, Mike!

The Hobbit Trailer Online Now

Just a few days after the official announcement of LEGO licensing sets based on The Lord Of The Rings & The Hobbit, Warner Brothers has released the first trailer for the latter and I’d have to say it is fantastic. Take a look if you haven’t already seen it (several times) and then prepare yourself to wait a whole year to see the full movie. At least we’ll get some LOTR sets this summer to tide us over until next December.

Super Heroes Unite! November Winners Announced

The final winners of LEGO’s Super Heroes Unite! contest have been revealed! And they’re mostly videos, which is a little one-sided if you ask me, especially considering some of the phenomenal entries that weren’t moving pictures. Anyway, big congrats to November’s 1st place winners, Kris Theorin (above) and Paul Hollingsworth (below), who will be getting their hands on the entire DC Universe line-up of LEGO Super Heroes and a maquette. Hit the link to check out all other winners including the grand prize winner, Dan Glasure, who also happened to be one of October’s 1st place winners. I guess that guy’s going to be loaded up on LEGO Super Heroes sets. Also, does anyone think they’ll do another contest for this summer’s Marvel sets?

LEGO’s Next Precious: LEGO Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit

LEGO The Lord of the Rings

You saw this coming, right? It seems like a perfect fit to me after LEGO basically dumped it’s Pirates theme to make room for Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean line. They’re obviously looking for popular licenses that can enhance if not replace their own similar themes (don’t worry, I doubt Castle/Kingdoms is going anywhere). Since the article went live on Variety at midnight the web has been abuzz with salivating fans. Here’s the skinny:

BILLUND, Denmark and Burbank, CA – December 16, 2011 – Warner Bros. Consumer Products and The LEGO Group announced today a partnership that awards the world’s leading construction toy brand exclusive rights to develop build-and-play construction sets based on THE LORD OF THE RINGS™ trilogy and the two films based on THE HOBBIT™. The multi-year licensing agreement grants access to the library of characters, settings, and stories for THE LORD OF THE RINGS property, as well as films The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again. LEGO® THE LORD OF THE RINGS construction sets are slated for a rolling global launch beginning in June 2012 in the United States, with LEGO THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY scheduled for later in the year.

“Only LEGO, with their expertise in the construction category, is capable of doing justice to the incredibly imaginative environments depicted in the world of THE LORD OF THE RINGS and the two films based on THE HOBBIT,” said Karen McTier, executive vice president, domestic licensing and worldwide marketing, Warner Bros. Consumer Products. “These films give life to amazing worlds and characters and we are thrilled to bring fans these products that deliver an imaginative play experience befitting of these beloved properties.”

The LEGO THE LORD OF THE RINGS collection will translate into LEGO form the epic locations, scenes and characters of Middle-earth as depicted in all three films, including The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

In late 2012, LEGO THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY will give fans of all ages a chance to build and play out the fantastical story and new characters of the legendary Middle-earth adventures depicted in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey from Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson, slated to premiere December 14, 2012.

“Our collaboration with Warner Bros. Consumer Products has delivered numerous worldwide successes in the construction toy aisle with lines like LEGO HARRY POTTER and LEGO BATMAN, introducing us to loyal audiences who love great stories, strong characters and the toys that they inspire,” said Jill Wilfert, vice president, licensing and entertainment for The LEGO Group. “It’s particularly exciting to now be able to create sets based on the fantasy worlds and characters from THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and the two films based on THE HOBBIT, not only because we know they will foster collectability and creative play, but also because these are two properties that our fans have been asking us to create for years.”

With mention of the popularity of current licensed themes and the future synergistic releases of the Marvel half of the LEGO Suoerheroes line and now LEGO Lord of the Rings due in June, I think LEGO is making a strategic strike to rule the toy aisle in 2012. While I doubt next year will mark the end of the world, It will certainly bring about the destruction of my wallet.

Update on Toys for Tots

Brickset's Donation

We’ve hit a bit of a snafu regarding our Toys for Tots efforts. Apparently, LEGO being “aware of our activities” isn’t exactly the same as being okay with it. After discovering yesterday that they implemented a three email restriction on the number of emails that can be sent from one email address to another, I discovered that simply editing the from email address, you could still use the send/back/send method. The number of greetings started to skyrocket once again. And then this morning at approximately 9:19am, I’ve had my IP address blocked from the site as well as a few other members of the rebel alliance. I can’t even check the number of toys donated let alone send a greeting or read any greetings I may receive.

Kind of a low blow if you ask me. If the Empire LEGO was serious about donating a million toys, they would lift the blockades they put in place. Heck, if they were really serious, they’d just donate the toys anyway and we can call it a day. I understand that a webmaster has to do what he/she can to keep the site up and running and not to overload the servers, but what they are actually doing is making it harder to donate toys. I’ve had a few alliance members send some test greetings using unique email addresses that have never been used before, and those greetings were never received. The other thing I hope they realize is that once we hit a million toys, everything will go back to normal and the site traffic to LEGOSantaYoda.com will go back down to the near zero levels it was before.

Despite their efforts, however, we are burning through the rest of the unread emails that landed in our inbox. We are patiently waiting the confirmation of any greetings that are successfully received. A few greetings have trickled into the inbox, but nothing substantial that’s worth mentioning. Those were probably previously undeliverable messages that finally got delivered. I have my suspicion that they stopped outgoing emails and are devising another fail safe measure to screen out greetings in some way but no pattern has emerged quite yet.

In the meantime, I’d like to mention a few things. In addition to the great giveaways we have planned, Huw Millington of Brickset has graciously donated a set of polybags that were either very difficult to obtain in the US or was never made available (see first pic above) as a prize. Ken “buriedbybricks” is donating an copy of 7958 LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar to the one who sends the most greetings. All names will be drawn when we hit 1 million toys or on December 24th, whichever happens sooner.

Prize

As of this writing, we’re currently at 321,919 toys donated. I’m determined to do what I can to make that number go higher. When we started this campaign, the number was only at 590. The good news is that one of my contacts did say that they will honor that number, or whatever number it happens to be at December 24th (when the site is shut down). Let’s hope that they stick to their word.

FOR THE TOTS!

LEGO’s Next License: LEGO Minecraft

LEGO Minecraft

You know that little crowd-sourcing project of LEGO’s, LEGO CUUSOO, where you can vote on the fan submitted creations to hopefully see some of them turn into a real set? Well, the LEGO Minecraft idea has reached the 10,000 vote threshold to be turned into a real set. The official press release below, more pictures on the Minecraft page:

BILLUND, Denmark – A project backed by Minecraft developer Mojang has become the first user-sponsored project to reach the 10,000 vote threshold on the new global version of LEGO® CUUSOO, opening the way for a LEGO set featuring Minecraft to become a reality.

It took the project only 48 hours to gather votes from 10,000 fans of the project from around the world.

“We’re really excited to see the fantastic enthusiasm of the Minecraft community. This is what LEGO CUUSOO is all about, connecting people’s passion to the LEGO brick,” says Paal Smith-Meyer, Head of the LEGO New Business Group. “It is still too early to say whether a Minecraft play set will become a LEGO product as it still needs to go through a review and approval process to ensure it meets our usual LEGO standards, but it is certainly a lot closer.”

A go/no-go decision should be reached within the next few weeks. Assuming it is given a “go,” then development on any new sets will begin. During this time, LEGO model designers refine the product, while packaging, instructions, and marketing are developed ready for a production run. This will take several months.

LEGO CUUSOO is an idea collection system that asks the Danish toy manufacturers’ consumers to submit and vote for their favourite ideas for new LEGO products. It can be found at http://lego.cuusoo.com . The site is currently in “open beta” and has been well received by fans and niche interest groups eager to see their ideas become official LEGO products.

CUUSOO, which means ‘imagination’ or sometimes ‘wish’ in Japanese, has been developed with CUUSOO SYSTEM, a subsidiary of Japan-based Elephant Design that has worked with open innovation and crowd sourcing for more than 10 years.

The LEGO Group has worked with CUUSOO since 2008 on a Japanese site that has attracted hundreds of ideas and seen thousands of votes cast by a 35,000-strong community. Now the time has come to test the concept internationally.

The first Japanese product, the Shinkai 6500 submersible, went on sale in Japan in February 2011. The next Japanese LEGO CUUSOO model will be the Hayabusa unmanned spacecraft launched in the first quarter of next year.

It took the Shinkai 6500, 420 days to reach 1,000 votes in Japan. Hayabusa took 57 days to 1,000. With the launch of the LEGO CUUSOO worldwide site the threshold was raised to 10,000 to reflect the larger audience.

On LEGO CUUSOO, ideas that are supported by enough votes will be examined by a LEGO jury that will check that the models meet LEGO standards of safety and playability and support the LEGO brand. Consumers who have their ideas chosen for production will earn 1% of the total net sales of the product.

In the case of the Minecraft project, Mojang and the collaborators have offered the 1% CUUSOO royalty to a charity of Mojang’s choice.

How To Give Toys to Toys for Tots

As you may or may not be aware, LEGO’s Star Wars-themed holiday microsite, LEGOSantaYoda.com launched a few weeks ago. From the site, you can vote in a poll, view a gift guide chock full of LEGO Star Wars goodness, and even enter in a weekly contest. There is one other major aspect and its their e-greeting cards. You can send a virtual greeting card to a friend or enemy, and for every greeting sent, LEGO will donate a toy to Toys for Tots, up to 1 million toys. The catch is that the recipient of the email has to click on the link provided in order for the email to count, and for the “toys given” counter to increment. As of three days ago, the total amount of toys donated was an embarrassingly low number, somewhere in the 1800′s. That’s when we decided to step in and do something about it.

We offered up a prize, a copy of 8095 General Grievous’ Starfighter, given to a winner selected at random. All you had to do was send an e-greeting to giveaways@fbtb.net with a message of “For the Tots!” and you were entered. And you could enter as many times as you wish. My cohort Ken “buriedbybricks” Robichaud also offered a prize for the most e-greetings sent. The response has been tremendous to say the least. We are now at 65,299 toys donated. But that’s not enough. I want to hit that 1 million toy mark. It is possibly the easiest way to donate a toy to Toys for Tots. And here’s how you do it:

  1. Go to LEGOSantaYoda.com
  2. Select a greeting card.
  3. Fill in the form with your name and email address. Enter FBTB for recipient and giveaways@fbtb.net as the address. Enter a message of “For the Tots!”
  4. Hit send.
  5. Hit the back button on your browser.
  6. The information you entered should still be there. Hit send again!
  7. Go to step 5

I guarantee that every email received will be read and clicked through to get the toy counter to rise.

Now here’s where things get interesting. In an attempt to unite the AFOL community behind the cause, I’ve contacted a few other AFOL sites to help spread the word on our effort. Brickset is getting in on the action and will be donating a prize to be awarded to another random lucky winner. Toys’N'Bricks is having a contest of their own. And in addition to the General Grievous set, FBTB is upping the ante. One lucky winner will receive the following prize package (MacBook Pro not included):

Prize for Donations

You’ll get every single LEGO Star Wars promo minifigure ever made: Chrome C-3PO, Chrome Darth Vader, Chrome Stormtrooper, White Boba Fett, and Shadow ARF Trooper. I’ve been saving them for a worthy cause and I can’t think of anything better than trying to raise 1 million toys for Toys for Tots. With the holidays upon us and all the sales news flying around, it’s easy to forget about those less fortunate. It doesn’t take a lot of time, energy or effort. And it costs nothing. I didn’t do a charity drive this year for various reasons, but I’ve adopted this little endeavor as our 2011 charitable effort.

If there is one cause that Adult Fans of LEGO can and should unite behind, this is it. We can all remember what it was like to opening up a LEGO set on Christmas, and this donation drive gives needy children the opportunity to experience that same joy. You have a chance to make a LEGO fan for life, so why not? Send an email, a toy gets donated. It couldn’t be any easier. So what are you waiting for? Get clicking!
