[SDCC] LEGO To Show Off Batman’s Tumbler at Comic Con

1405869303000-76023-Tumbler-DC

A few hours ago, USA Today revealed LEGO’s newest Ultimate Collector’s Set, The Tumbler from The Dark Knight. The Tumbler, based on Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, will be on display at the San Diego Comic Con this week starting Wednesday July 23rd. The LEGO Tumbler has 1,869 pieces, will retail for $199 and will be available starting in September. The Brand Retail store calendar for August shows an early bird access on August 18th which I can only assume is for this set. Included in the set are two minifigs: Christian Bale’s Batman and Heath Ledger’s Joker, pictured below.

[SDCC] Pop! Art of the Geek Exhibit to Feature Works by LEGO Artists Brandon Griffith and Nathan Sawaya

The names of Brandon Griffith and Nathan Sawaya should not be unfamiliar to our readers. They’ve been featured before for their work and next week during the San Diego Comic Con, they will be participating in an art show called Pop! Art of the Geek. The show is curated by Nathan Sawaya and “highlights the artwork of a dozen established and emerging artists who have re-imagined the icons of pop culture in ways never before seen”.

Brandon will be featuring the above pictured piece, titled “It’s All A Joke,” a construct of the comedian’s badge from the popular Watchmen comic.

Nathan Sawaya will be displaying his iconic Han Solo in Carbonite LEGO sculpture.

If you’ve never seen either piece in person, it’s worth your time to stop by the gallery see them for yourself. The pictures really don’t do them justice. The exhibit will be on display at the Michael J. Wolf Fine Arts Gallery located at 363 Fifth Ave in the heart of the Gaslamp District across the street from Dick’s Last Resort. Gallery hours are from Wednesday July 23rd to Sunday July 27th from 11am to 7pm. If you are going to the show, it is extremely easy to find as it is on the second block you walk up when you head into the Gaslamp for lunch or dinner. All of the art is for sale and benefits the Art Revolution Foundation that works to put art supplies in schools. For more infomation check out the Art of the Geek website.

[SDCC] Another LEGO Comic Con Exclusive Minifig Revealed: The Hobbit’s Bard the Bowman

The LEGO Group continues to spread its San Diego Comic Con exclusive news around as this time it’s The Hollywood Reporter getting the scoop on the next Comic Con reveal. Bard the Bowman from The Hobbit franchise is the second of four exclusive minifigs to be given away. As for the other two, the article has this tidbit:

Among the other minifigs at the Con will be the Collector, a character from the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, a DC fig and one from The Lego Movie.

We’ve already known about The Collector. The DC fig is most likely a way to promote the upcoming LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham game. Either that or it’ll be a TV series Batman figure to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the character. The LEGO Movie figure is a surprise though and it could actually mean the wrist action Unikitty revealed yesterday is the exclusive. We’ll see if any more news is revealed.

Also of note in the article is the following:

This year, to avoid chaos, the company has a system wherein an attendee’s badge is scanned to determine a “winner” in a lottery-style giveaway.

What a relief.

The Warner Bros. booth will also feature the gigantic Smaug statue pictured above. The statue was designed and built by Erik Varszegi, weighs over 411 lbs and features 83,433 pieces.

[SDCC] More LEGO Comic Con Exclusives Revealed: Ghost Ship, Unikitty? And an Upcoming Movie Set Revealed

Eagle-eyed contributor Tohst spotted this Yahoo! Movies article revealing a few more goodies in store for us attending San Diego Comic Con.

First up is a Unikitty whose face changes from “Cuteskitty” to “Cheerkitty” with a flick of a wrist. I’m guessing this Unikitty is bigger than the brick built one you get in a set, maybe about the same size as the awesome keychain light. That being said, I don’t believe that it is one of the four exclusive minifigs that LEGO plans to give away and it is probably just an item for sale at the booth.

Next is a reveal for an upcoming set based The LEGO Movie coming out January 2015. It looks to be a small set featuring Batman, Angry Kitty, a Micromanager, and a skeleton. Hopefully this picture isn’t cropped and hiding a gigantic model in the background somewhere because this would be a cheap way to get Angry Kitty even though she is a different design than the one that comes in Emmet’s Construct-o-Mech.

The second reveal is the Star Wars themed retail exclusive mentioned in my previous article, The Ghost ship. Retailing for $39.99 it features the R2 unit, Chopper. And being built in the same Chibi style as Rocket’s Warbird, my hope of a full-sized TV series Batmobile is quickly diminishing. The Ghost, Batmobile, and Warbird all retail for $39.99 and are limited to 250 each per day of the con not including preview night.

[SDCC] LEGO Comic Con Exclusives Revealed – Guardians of the Galaxy’s The Collector, Classic TV Batmobile, and Star Wars Ghost Starship

The-Collector

Once again, the Wall Street Journal is the place to be for they have spilled the beans partially on LEGO’s offerings for this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Pictured above is The Collector from the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film. He is the first of four minifigures to be given away at SDCC and so far the only one to be revealed.

And that’s not all. The last paragraph of the article states the following:

The two other Lego sets that will be sold at the Lego booth are of a Batmobile from the classic television series, and of the Ghost starship from “Star Wars.” Each is priced at $39.99 and Lego will sell 1000 of each set during the show, capped at 250 per day

Oh. My. Freakin’. God. A classic tv series LEGO Batmobile would make my head explode. Based on the price point, it is feasible that it could be a regular set since the Ecto-1 and DeLorean sets were priced about the same. But looking at the LEGO Rocket Raccoon’s Warbird announcement from yesterday which features a mini ship at the same price, I’m left wondering. I can only hope that the Batmobile is regular sized but we’ll find out next week.

The article also shows off a lifesized Rocket Raccoon and Groot statue made out of Megabloks just kidding LEGO.

I have to go catch my breath now.

Amazon’s BOGO 40% Off Sale Select Brands, Includes LEGO

79008 Pirate Ship Ambush

Toys’R’Us isn’t the only place in town having a BOGO 40% off sale select LEGO themes. Seems like Amazon wants a piece of the action is offering up their own BOGO 40% off sale. Selection seems to be limited to some Super Heroes, Star Wars, and some Lord of the Rings/Hobbit sets.

Just like the last time this sale came up, the prices are good on the already discounted price. The best deal is once again 79008 Pirate Ship Ambush. It is currently marked down 19% to $81.22. If you purchase two of them, your total discount is -$32.49 dropping the price down to $129.95, making each set cost just under $65 before any tax.

One other item of note is 6860 The Batcave. Though only showing a modest 4% discount, it has been discontinued and is gone from LEGO Shop@Home’s site so if you’ve procrastinated on this one, now would be a good time to pick up a copy or two. 6860 Batcave comes with Bane, Poison Ivy, Robin, Batman, and Bruce Wayne.

Update: Seems I was somehow dialed into the UK version of the Shop@Home site. 6860 The Batcave is still available from the US Shop@Home site. My apologies for the confusion.

Discount will be reflected on the final page of the ordering process.

[SDCC] LEGO Comic Con Exclusive Rocket Raccoon’s Warbird Revealed

Earlier today, the Wall Street Journal revealed LEGO’s retail exclusive for the 2014 San Diego Comic Con, Rocket Raccoon’s Warbird from Guardians of the Galaxy. The set looks to be a mini version of his ship. Without seeing the back, it’s hard to tell if it’s done in the same style as the chibi-style ships like previous years’ retail exclusives (there could be a set of handlebars a la Darth Maul’s cave racer) or if it’s just a MINI ship. Rocket Raccoon does feature a new set of threads though so there’s that. The minifig giveaways, if any, have yet to be revealed.

Rocket’s Warbird has 145 pieces, a new suit for Raccoon and will cost you $39.99. Yawns are free. The 2014 San Diego Comic Con kicks off next week starting with Preview Night on Wednesday July 23rd.

Marvel Roundup: Casting, Cameos, Character Covers and… Choppers?

empire-gotg2

Let’s start this off with the least spoilerish thing on the list and those interested can check after the jump for the rest. Empire has two character covers for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy and the one above gives a much better look at the films antagonists, the good guy cover is mostly more of the same. I’ve no doubt we’ll start seeing Korath, Ronan and Nebula popping in cosplay a lot more very soon.

30301 Batwing

For those of you north of the border go check your Toys’R’Us stores. Chat room resident CloneEmperor sent in the above pic of 30301 Batwing found at his local store. No word yet on US availability that I know of, but typically things found at Canadian TRU stores end up at US Walmart stores. We’ll post again once we get a verified US siting.
