The Rebels Clip That Broke Don

We’ve all had those moments, those defining moments where our open-minded approach to any one thing quickly turns into an opinion and we turn our backs to that thing. In this case, the thing in question is Rebels, and that moment is the clip above. This was the clip that turned Don Solo against the show. I was already trepidatious about the show, but what the clip did for me was cement my hatred for Chopper, and in turn, made me realize just how much this show is going to suck.

And would it kill the sound engineers to generate new sound effects?

I’ll stick to Nick’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles instead. Such a GREAT show, you’re missing out if you haven’t been keeping up.

Pictures of (possible) Ep. VII Storm Trooper Helmets

Take this one with a big heaping pile of salt, but Indie Revolver is reporting a first-look at the upcoming Storm Trooper helmets from Episode VII. The biggest reason I say salt is the “reliable sources” quote, which strikes me as a bit too Cardassian way of dodging a question.

A few questions for me on this one. The first is why there are still Storm Troopers and what not thirty years after the Empire was pretty wrecked. I’m hoping that they actually just explain it, and don’t just go all Enterprise on us and say “it’s later, nothing has changed.” The helmet itself is very Storm Trooper, yet seems kind of… odd. I don’t have a good reason for thinking that, it just feels like it’s weird. Maybe it’s the giant nasal strip over the middle, maybe it’s the big ole forehead.

They also provided a different one, that could be desert or snow trooper variations. Almost looks like a snow trooper, but backdrop says sand. Maybe this is the new peacekeeping or Republic variety… who knows. Either way, it’s a safe bet we’ll be getting a lot of new Storm Trooper minifigs next year. It’s LEGO, so expect them in a variety of colors and for the regular guy to only show up in a very expensive set.

An additional picture also surfaced without the watermark, and has a few additional molding details to the prop replica. Anyone else have thoughts on this thing?

Review: 75048 The Phantom

75048 The Phantom 1

This thing is a piece of crap. 1 out of 5 stars. There. I’ve said it. And I’m tempted to end the review of 75048 The Phantom right here and now so we can all go about our day because this set is barely deserving any more attention than that. But that wouldn’t be right and I’m sure you’ll want to know why I hate it so much. So I’ll do my best to tell you exactly why.

There was about a week’s worth of time that passed between me building the set and me sitting here writing the review and during that time I was able to distill my feelings down to two coherent thoughts. The two main reasons why I hate this set are: 1) It’s ugly and 2) It’s not worth the money.

Star Wars Rebels 7 Minute Preview On Disney XD Tonight

SWR Key Art

You can catch an exclusive sneak peek at the first seven-minutes of the upcoming animated series Star Wars Rebels tonight on Disney XD, immediately following the Disney XD premiere of Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars (7:30pm-8:30pm ET/PT). However, if you don’t have any interest in watching P&F on a Star Wars themed adventure (and I really can’t see why you wouldn’t), you can watch the preview on Youtube at this link. It will be live shortly after 9pm ET tonight, at which point we’ll most likely update this post.

I seems this may only be on the US DXD channel though, as I’ve checked my listings in Canada and the Phineas & Ferb special doesn’t appear to be on tonight here.

Update: This block of Star Warsian fun will be on the Canadian DXD August 17th, starting at 5:30 ET with a brand new chapter of the New Yoda Chronicles.

Price Wars! Amazon vs. Walmart On Select LEGO Star Wars Sets

75021 Republic Gunship

Amazon and Walmart are having a bit of a price war, matching each other’s discount on a couple of sets. I’m not sure who fired the first volley but we are all winners. Discounts are applied on some of the older sets that will be retiring soon if they haven’t been already. This is just a sample list of some of the larger sets. Some battle packs may also be discounted down to $10 or less.

LEGO Connect App

LEGO Connect Icon

One of the not-very-well-advertised promotions going on at the LEGO booth at last week’s San Diego Comic Con was LEGO Connect. It’s an app you can download for your iOS or Android device and once installed, you can scan, activate, and explore 4D content. Spread out around the booth were icons similar to the one pictured above featuring a different character. Turn on the app and point your phone’s camera at the icon to begin the download. Once scanned, you’re treated to a short video ranging from a trailer for the LEGO Batman 3 video game, a cutscene from The LEGO Movie, or some other video. If you go download the app and scan the image above right off of your computer’s monitor, it gives you a better idea of what it’s about. LEGO Connect content will be available in the Club Magazine offering a new way to provide readers an additional way to enjoy the magazine.

It’s kind of a neat little thing. There were some videos already pre-loaded, mostly 360° views of some of the upcoming sets but the real meat of the app is scanning for new content. The recognition was extremely fast and works best when the icon is against a plain background. I had trouble downloading when two icons were really close to each other and both were visible by the camera or when an icon was against a busy background like a glass window with LEGO models behind it. That being said, I was able to get the app to recognize the Star Wars icon from my laptop’s display of a photo I took of my phone that took a photo of the icon. And if the app can do that, kids should have no problems scanning icons from the LEGO Club Magazine.

My Club Magazine subscription has lapsed but I want to re-subscribe to see what else this app can deliver. The app is free from Apple iTunes or Google Play.

[SDCC] More Images of 75084 Wookiee Gunship

75084 Wookiee Gunship 1

LEGO Star Wars sets for January 2015 is shaping up to be a Rebels push as SDCC debuted the model for 75084 Wookiee Gunship. For seventy ($69.99) of your hard earned dollars, you’ll get a 570 piece model with four minifigs, three of which are Wookies. There is a sled / gunner’s station that fits into the cargo hold of the gunship and two cockpits up front. This set seems like such a derivative of the Republic Gunship that it’s hard for me get excited about it. And the price is a bit hard to swallow considering what you’re getting for it.

91yMiMFMATL__SL1500_

A quick break from Comic-Con to bring you a bit of sales news. Forum member psycho013 has alerted us to a pre sale on Amazon for the summer wave of Star Wars sets in the US. The Scout Fighter and Cantina sets are available at about a 15% discount.

75057 B-Wing is still MIA for pre-order.

[SDCC] The Statues of The LEGO Booth

Chopper Statue 1

The LEGO booth is home to a record number of statues this year, totalling five in all. We’ve already posted images of the LEGO Batcycle and a few snaps of the other statues but I thought I’d try taking a few more.

Choppers head actually moves by rotating left and right and features its front wheel which was missing from the previous photos released of the statue. At first I thought its two legs were actually going into the table until I realized that the angle was built that way on purpose.

My favorite one is the of Spider-Man complete with webbed up camera.
