[UK] May the 4th Deals at LEGO Shop@Home UK

I didn’t realize this until just now, but the dates for the May the 4th sales promo for LEGO Shop@Home is different between the US/CA and UK. The UK sale started today, May 3rd. other than 10240 Red Five X-wing Starfighter going on sale, there isn’t a whole lot of other notable discounts. Most hover around the 10-15% range, with the planet Series 2 sets topping out at 30%. You might find something you like below. Deals are good both online and in store. US Deals will be forthcoming:

UCS 10240 Red Five X-wing Starfighter Time Lapse Build

I finally got around to finishing up the time lapse video. Side note: there seems to be an ever so slight zoom shift on either the focus or the metering, so the picture may start to stutter in a way. I’ll have to try manual focus next time. The exposure seemed pretty even though so I think I figured out the metering issue I had with my other video. Also, I need to figure out a better angle. Anyways, there were a total of 11,117 photos shot at 1 frame/second, compressed down to about 3 minutes of video. Our sample sets didn’t come with book 3, so this was shot over two different days once we finally got the last set of instruction.

Side By Side Review: 10240 Red Five X-wing Starfighter and 7191 UCS X-wing Fighter

000
Back when Lego started making Star Wars sets I was still in my “dark age” so I missed out on a lot of the early releases. Even by 2000, when the original UCS X-wing came out, I still wasn’t ready to throw that kind of money at a single set. After a few years of re-embracing the hobby I wound up paying a good deal more for a used second hand kit, worrying that if I didn’t pick one up then I would only face higher prices down the line. I never got around to building it but I was satisfied to have it on standby. Fast forward to last February and the new Red Five announcement. Suddenly that old set I had for the most part forgotten about became relevant again. Like everyone else I was surprised to see Lego redesigning such a large model, and curious how they’d stack up against each other. With that in mind, Ace managed to procure a copy of the new set for me on the condition that I would review both at the same time. So. Here we are.

Review: 10240 Red Five X-wing Starfighter

QO5C2475

It seems like a lifetime ago when I first saw the very first Ultimate Collector Series set, 7191 X-wing Fighter, on the Toys’R'Us shelf. The silver printed X-wing on a black box looked so slick and looked nothing like the other LEGO sets on the shelf. I was swooning over it and without a second thought bought it, took it home, and built it in a day. And it was awesome. I proudly displayed it on my shelf along with the other UCS set that came out that year, 7181 TIE Interceptor, for many, many years. Fast forward a few years later, and it’s time to pack up our tiny apartment and move into a house and with the amount of LEGO I had at the time, it was no easy feat. Unfortunately, the X-wing along with a bunch of other sets on display had to be taken apart with little time to do it, so I tore it apart and stuffed it inside a couple of Ziploc bags and then stuffed the bags inside a box where they remain to this day. I never bothered to rebuild it for a couple of reasons. It needed and still needs some serious cleaning, and the condition of the stickers was in bad shape. The stickers that LEGO used back then disintegrated over time due to some combination of age, heat, and dust. Try and peel them off and you would regret that action for they would break apart into tiny little pieces and once those pieces got on your fingers, they were really difficult to get off. Surprisingly, the one sticker that survived was the familiar UCS information label. So there it sits in a state of decomposition in box in my office a few feet away from me. Fast forward a few years later, and here we are today on the eve of an epic remake about to be released to the public. Ultimate Collector Series 10240 Red Five X-wing Starfighter is a re-engineered UCS 7191 X-wing Fighter. LEGO has re-released and re-designed several sets before, but this is the first time a UCS set is getting the recycle treatment. There are many fans who fell into the hobby too late and covet the set so much so that it commands a pretty high aftermarket value, ringing up at around $800 at my last check a few weeks ago. So this remake may be welcomed with open arms and smaller budgets, but with 13 years of a legacy to go up against, how does the newer version stack up?

On May the 4th, you can build a MINI version 75018 Jek-14′s Stealth Starfighter at participating Toys’R'Us stores. The event time is from 12-2pm. Closer Look At Hoth Han Solo

Hoth Han Solo - May the Fourth Promo

Forum member jallenuk tweeted us some out-of-package pics of the upcoming May the Fourth promotional figure, Hoth Han Solo. The pics confirm that the final color of the hood will be brown, and not tan as shown on the packaging. You will need to purchase at least $75 in LEGO Star Wars product from LEGO Shop@Home and LEGO Brand Retail stores to receive the figure. The promotional period is from May 4 to May 5, so in a little over 3 weeks.

The figure looks great but my point of it not having a high enough cool factor is still valid.

Thanks jallenuk!
