Review: 9479 Ivan Mater

You know, I’ll be honest, I absolutely hate Larry the Cable Guy. I can’t stand his comedy, he just annoys me, and if you want to share the feeling, go look up the video where he looks suspiciously like Dave Coulier, telling the same jokes minus the fake accent and redneck character. That being said… he was probably the perfect cast for Mater.

That’s not to say Mater doesn’t annoy me, he does. He was a fine supporting character in Cars (that could have been made better if they would have just cut out the Cable Guy catch phrases), but as a lead… well, there’s a reason why Cars 2 is Pixar’s worst movie. Cars 2 gave us Mater, center stage, as a spy. And at one point, a spy in disguise… and I’ll admit, it was some of the actual funniest moments in the film that weren’t insanely forced (unlike, say, the wasabi “ice cream” joke).

So, how does a little $7 impulse set of Ivan Mater stack up?

[US] Summer Clearance Reports

Word on the street is that the new Lord of the Rings and Monster Fighters sets are hitting shelves. Stores need to make room, so be sure to keep an eye out for clearance sales for older inventory. So far we’ve heard about Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean hitting 30-50% off at Walmarts, along with K-Mart clearance including Star Wars, Harry Potter, Cars 2, and more.

As always with big chain retailers, your mileage may vary. But these super savings are always worth stopping in for a peek. Be sure to check the forums to see what people are finding.

Review: 9484 Red’s Water Rescue

Red’s Water Rescue is one of the “small” sets from the Car’s line, this one featuring a minor character from Cars and Cars 2 (Red), and a character so minor in Cars 2 that even LEGO barely mentioned him in the blurb for the set. Okay, it could be that I just sort of blocked almost everything about that movie out of my mind. It was a curious thing… if it had any name other than Pixar attached to it, the thing would have just been a mindless summer movie for kids.

But Pixar puts a certain expectation in your mind that it’s going to be awesome. Toy Story managed to be awesome three different times. Up and Wall-E can be counted among the best films ever; not just one of the best animated films…  but films in general. And while Cars can be considered one of the weaker films in the lineup, it was still genuinely good, even if formulaic. Cars 2, not so much. And that leaves us with a quandry in this little $20 set? Is it more like Cars, where we first saw Red, or like Cars 2, where we were given Acer and two hours of Mater?

Sgt. Highgear’s Stiff Upper Lip

Cars 2 may not have gotten a lot of love compared to first film, but personally I thought it was great fun. Cars in general doesn’t get a lot of love from MOC’ers, but when it does they’re usually top notch and this one is no exception. Sgt. Highgear’s LEGO doppleganger by fvin&yan is spot on, looks ready to defend The Queen at all costs and is quite dashing in his studly bearskin to boot.

UK Toy Fair 2012 – Everything Else

UK Toy Fair 2012 - Everything Else

So, here I will try to sum up everything else I saw.  My focus really was on the licenced themes, but I did try to take in as much else as I could too … apart from Friends, which I didn’t see due to a lack of time.

Monster Hunters

Quite an interesting theme … it was described as a battle between good guys and monsters, whereby the monster in the set is after a crystal and if they get them all, they can collect them together and unleash hell.  Most of the monsters are new, although some do lend themselves to the Colletable Minifigs line.  The sets are due out in August, but with a particular marketing push around Halloween, for obvious reasons.

I quite liked the 9466 Mad Professor and His Monster set, as it featured a light brick, which was used to show electricity being fired at the lifeless Frankenstein as it laid on a bed.  Very effective I thought.  The 9467 Ghost Train set also had a nice feature where the bat wings moved as you pull the train along.

There were some nice new moulds for some of the figures, including the vampire bat minifig and a new glow in the dark ghost, with a tuft of the sheet on the back of the head.  The Good Guys and vehicles have quite a classic 1930s style design.

UK Toy Fair 2012 - Everything Else

The Summer wave here revolved around an expansion further into the wilderness with a mining theme … featuring dumper trucks (with a brick built dumper bit, rather than a one piece mould), trucks, diggers, cranes and a mine set featuring a drilling machine, conveyor belts and mine train.  The minifigs seemed to have new helmets (at least to me) which used the 1×1 tiles for a light on the front of the helmet.

Quite nice sets really and it’s good to get some variety from the usual sets found in the city line.

The new City Advent Calendar has a fire theme in 2012 and veers away from creating a bigger build like the prison from this year.  The little builds feature a new modified 1 x 2 brick with an actual brick pattern.  These were pretty cool and will no doubt be sought after pieces.

Colletable Minifigs

Nothing new on display, although the dealer catalogue I got shows mock ups for the packaging for series 7 and 8, with release dates of May and September respectively.

Highlights for me were 7347 Highway Pickup, which featured nifty light bricks which could be used for indicators or headlights and the 7346 Seaside House, which had 2 decent alternate builds.

Expect these in August.

9398 4 x 4 Crawler was an extremely cool model … with full RC controls and 2 motors allowed independent & power 4 wheel steering.  There’ll be a competition to customise these apparently.  The 9396 Helicopter set was absolutely massive and had a lot of play features.  No motorisation, but as usual, there was space for this if you have the skills to add it.

Not really a line I know anything about, but there were some really cool looking new models, especially 9448 Samurai Mech, which reminded me of all the mecha’s I see posted in the MOC section and the 9450 Epic Dragon Battle set just blew me away with how it all sprang into action when you pick it up.  Nice sets, if you’re into this theme.  Lots of new snake-like minifigure moulds here too, in a variety of colours.

UK Toy Fair 2012 - Everything Else

Dino & Cars

Nothing new that we don’t already know about

Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter and Alien Conquest

Nothing new and all sets due to exit in July 2012, so get in there soon if you want any of these sets.

Other themes (Friends, Hero Factory, Duplo, Bricks and More)

Didn’t have time to look

Whilst killing time waiting for my appointment, I found the Re:Creation stand who make things like the minifig display cases, head shaped storage bins and torches.  It looks like we’re getting some new Star Wars torches (Vader, Yoda, Stormie and Darth Maul – although I overheard someone saying this might not make it to market).  There’s also a pretty cool looking Darth Vader desk lamp.

Regards the minifig display cases, which I’ve yet to find in the UK … these are coming to Argos and Amazon by the summer.

Clearance Prices Drop at LEGO Shop@Home

Swamp Speeder

LEGO Shop @ Home has reduced some of its clearance items’ prices. Nothing too mind-blowingly awesome, but there are some noteworthy mentions.

>>8091 Republic Swamp Speeder $14.98 (down from $29.99)
>>8424 Mater’s Spy Zone $7.48 (down from $14.99)
>>8484 Ultimate Build Lightning McQueen $14.98 (down from $29.99)
>>8639 Big Bentley BustOut $41.98 (down from $69.99)

The Republic Swamp Speeder is the clear highlight at 50% off. Like most 2011 Star Wars exclusives, it had a fairly inflated price considering the piece count. Now it’s a much better value.
