LEGO has the Star Wars license through 2007.
Why does LEGO use megaphone pieces as blasters?
In the simplest of terms, molding blasters for minifigs was not a top priority for LEGO. The focus is on the sets themselves.

This is an attempt to increase playability and make it easier for a child to build any particular set.
Why is LEGO so expensive?
The products are expensive due mostly to our quality standards. We use only high quality materials (ie no PVC) in order to ensure that kids only have the safe materials. The costs also increase due to the number of elements within each set - Due to the variety of elements, we invest in many more molds than other toy manufacturers. <A quote from LEGO>
Why so many sets with Luke/Qui-Gon/Jar Jar minifigs?
Research has shown that consumers relate much more towards 'core' characters than they do secondary or background characters - hence the Luke with the Desert Skiff set.
