2012 Podracer Challenge Deadline is Tonight!

2012 Podracer Challenge

Midnight, Pacific time to be exact. That leaves you with just over thirteen hours left to polish off that podracer of yours and post it to the forum thread if you want to participate. The turnout so far has been spectacular and members are really going all out with this theme. I can’t wait to see what the last minute entries will look like. Once all the submissions are in we’ll double check them for compliance and set up the poll, so voting should be ready the weekend. Good luck!

Final Avengers Trailer Now Online!

The final trailer for Marvel’s The Avengers (retitled Marvel Avengers Assemble in the UK) has arrived and it’s an action packed joy ride I can’t wait to take. I do believe some of the scenes in this trailer give a bit more insight into the forthcoming sets and into the “mysterious” *cough* villains. The movie is set to release May the 4th in NA, so that’s one more reason to look forward to the May geek holiday weekend! I need to start building ASAP…

Star Wars Miniland @ Legoland Windsor (UK) from 16th March 2012 & COMPETITION!!

LEGOLAND Windsor has confirmed that the opening date of its new Star Wars Miniland Experience will be March 16, 2012.  There’ll be a special launch event on March 10, 2012, which I will be attending on behalf of FBTB, to report back all the news I can.

Star Wars Miniland will recreate famous planets, environments, characters, and vehicles from the Star Wars universe in LEGO form. Visitors will progress through the movie scenes chronologically, and special effects are set to include sound, lighting, and interactive elements.

Comprised of 1.5 million LEGO bricks formed into 2,000 models in a 1:20 scale, Star Wars Miniland will be housed in the building that used to host the Rocket Racers attraction. It will be be divided into seven distinct scenes – one for each of the franchise’s feature films and one for the animated Star Wars: Clone Wars spin-off.

The park will also celebrate the new attraction’s opening with a special Star Wars Miniland Experience Weekend on March 24-25, 2012. In addition to exploring the Star Wars Miniland area, guests will also be able to meet Star Wars characters, take part in a Jedi training camp, participate in Droid-building workshops and climb aboard a life-size Landspeeder.  The park will be open from 10am to 6pm on both days.

Tia Dalma’s Magnificent Shack

Tia Dalma's Shack

Walter Boy is playing pirates again and this time he’s tackled the humble abode of the witch doctor Tia Dalma. The shaping is fantastic, does a great job capturing the different parts of the run down swamp dwelling and is really accentuated by the mixture of different browns and the lush greenery. The base is also a nice touch, getting the look of the dark water across sharply while remaining even and understated.

Sgt. Highgear’s Stiff Upper Lip

cars01

Cars 2 may not have gotten a lot of love compared to first film, but personally I thought it was great fun. Cars in general doesn’t get a lot of love from MOC’ers, but when it does they’re usually top notch and this one is no exception. Sgt. Highgear’s LEGO doppleganger by fvin&yan is spot on, looks ready to defend The Queen at all costs and is quite dashing in his studly bearskin to boot.

Second Cutest Bounty Hunter In The Galaxy

I meant to post this Chibi IG-88 by rongYIREN the other night, but I’ll have to settle for being a Monday morning quarterback on this one. Though it’s hard to actually rank bounty hunters as the details of their jobs tend to need a bit of discretion and a healthy helping of exaggeration, if you ranked based on cuteness this guy would get the second biggest slice of the pie.

Bricklandia Comic #1

Poor Chewie. He doesn’t even get recognized at the medal ceremony at the end of A New Hope (though to be fair neither did the other two surviving pilots on the Death Star assault, Red 2 Wedge Antilles and Gold 7 Keyan Farlander. Where are their medals huh?). He’s not bitter or anything. Ever the loyal soldier, he follows Han and joins the Rebel alliance and relocates to Hoth. I wonder if he’s ever resented Han for that whole medal ceremony deal. I’m sure he thinks about it, ’cause he seems awfully eager to take advantage of a particular situation. Will Chewie finally come out on top? For once?

And for the record, this is last week’s comic. It’s entirely my fault that’s being posted a few days late. We’re going to try and get back on track this week.

And yes we still have our regular story line. We’re just banking that for when we get desperate for jokes.

In other news, I’d like to give a big thanks to those who responded for our call for volunteers. Our time grid is nearly filled so if you’re thinking about volunteering, don’t hesitate to shoot us an email. For those of you who did respond, I sent back verification instructions. The deadline to submit t-shirt sizes for the volunteers is quickly approaching, so if you decide to respond later, you might get stuck with a shirt too small or too big. And we can’t have that now can we?

Planning Star Wars Days at LEGOLAND California March 31 – April 1

Star Wars Days 2012

Star Wars Days at LEGOLAND California is slated to be held from March 31 to April 1, 2012 to coincide with their relaunch of the newly expanded Star Wars Miniland. The weekend is fast approaching and FBTB will of course be involved in the fan display. Are you planning on attending? Do you want to display a MOC or volunteer to staff the fan gallery? Have you ever wondered what Don Solo looks like without his hat on? There are a variety of ways to be involved with perks to help incentivize you. Yes, incentivize is a word. I just made it up. Read on for more details. It’s a giant wall of text with lots of information, so please read carefully.

Volunteer Your Time
The Fan Gallery will need a few volunteers to help man the tables. Ideally, there will be three people per shift, a shift being a one hour time block with a minimum of two hours per volunteer. And as a volunteer, you will get free entry into the park. This perk does not extend to your brother/sister/cousin/wife/son/daughter/nephew/niece/friend or anyone else unless they too are volunteering their time. More details will be forthcoming. Space is extremely limited. If you are interested in volunteering your time, please use the contact us form with the day (Saturday March 31 or Sunday April 1), the time slots (beginning from 10am to 6pm) you would like to volunteer for, your name, and contact information. Space is extremely limited.

Bring A MOC
There are three ways to contribute a MOC.

Podracers –
Our current Podracing Challenge contest was designed with Star Wars Days in mind. If you are building or have completed building your podracer for our contest, we invite you to mail in your MOC to be put on display as part of the Episode I Movie Build (more info on that below). For all podracers mailed in, a jury panel consisting of myself, Don “Solo” Reitz, and Ryan “Chief” Wood will select the best podracer to win cash. That’s right, cash. How does $50 USD sound? If you win, you must have a Paypal account. Everyone who sends in their podracer will receive an FBTB T-shirt (while supplies last) included in the return package. If you’re interested in sending in your podracer, please use the contact us form to get in touch with me for additional details and requirements. Podracers can be mailed in, dropped off, or brought to the park for set up. Podracers must be received no later than March 24th.

Star Wars themed MOC –
We’re not all about podracers, you know. Do you have a Star Wars themed MOC you’d like to awe and inspire the hundreds of Star Wars fans viewing the Fan Gallery over the weekend? We would be more than happy to accommodate you. If you bring your MOC and require time for set up, please use our contact form to get in touch with us for more details. If you’d like to mail in your MOC, that’s okay too. Just use the contact us form for more information.

Episode I Movie Build –
This is where it gets interesting. In addition to the normal MOCery on display, we are coordinating with LUGOLA (LEGO Users Group of Los Angeles) and SANDLUG (San Diego LEGO Users Group) to put on a display showing The Phantom Menace movie from beginning to end in LEGO form. Obviously, we can’t do the movie scene for scene, so we’ve broken down the movie into a few key sequences and have asked LUG members to sign up for a scene to display. The scene list is not definitive and if a builder wants to build something that’s not on the list, it’s not only acceptable but encouraged. All forms of MOCs are acceptable: micro scale, dioramas, mosaics, etc. If you are interested in contributing to the Movie Build, please use the contact us form and let us know.

The Episode I Movie Build will have it’s own little contest. A member from the the Events staff will be picking his/her top three favorite MOCs from the Movie Build to receive a LEGOLAND gift card good for anywhere in the park. The gift card values are $100 for 1st, $75 for 2nd, and $25 for 3rd. Unfortunately, podracers will not qualify (hence the reason FBTB will be awarding a cash prize instead).

The Dangling Carrot
LEGOLAND is working on securing incentives for those who volunteer their time and/or contribute a MOC for the fan gallery. Several incentives are being worked on and I can’t say what those incentives are at this time only because I have not received confirmation yet. I can say that a Star Wars Days t-shirt will be given to the volunteers who man the tables. This, the incentives, not the t-shirt, is something I’ve worked on with the Events Manager after last year’s Star Wars Days so as soon as I get more details, I will post the information.

Got questions? I suggest posting the question in the forum thread for all to read unless you’re one them shy types and would rather email us directly. That’s okay too.

Bothcon
Due to the very short time frame in planning for Star Wars Days, we will not be having Bothcon during that weekend. No decision about Bothcon 2012 has been made yet.

I’m probably forgetting things to mention cause it’s like super late and I’ve been writing for over an hour. Things will crystallize the closer we get to the big weekend so I’ll post again once I get more info or if I need to clarify things. It was a real treat meeting a lot of fans of the site last year. I hope that more of you can make it and that some of you will even contribute.

Techno-Arachno-Globophobes Look Away!

Trade Federation homing spider droid

Shannon Ocean spends a lot of time waging his Battle for the Moon, but that’s no moon. The new Death Star planet part is are turning out to be very popular with builders and it keeps turning up in great MOCs like Rogue Bantha’s Triport Spire. Shannon’s Trade Federation homing spider droid uses the part to capture the spherical shape of the droid’s body and does it in near perfect scale.
